This storm-ready Florida home was built with steel shipping containers as an innovative and cost-effective way to create an affordable home with a traditional interior layout and classic front porch.

This 1,600 square foot home has all the hallmarks of a traditional Florida home, with a stucco exterior, front porch, four bedrooms, two baths, and one-car garage. The converted shipping containers give strength and structure to the house, effectively creating a steel box that is married together with steel floor joists and a plywood subfloor on the ground floor and a roof-truss system on top. Partition walls are created within the house using steel studs. The load-bearing strength of the structure means there is more flexibility and opportunity for open space in the interior layout. Architect and designer Steve Armstrong chose a traditional layout for this house, with an open kitchen/living room/dining room in front, and two sets of bedrooms on each side in the back.
