The Problem

Hello BobVila.com community. I hope this will be well received and a BVC user can help me figure out what to do. Here is the problem. I have just purchased a home which will need a few updates. One of the updates is to move this wall of cabinets with refrigerator to the opposite wall and install a french door going out to the patio on the other side of this wall. With that being said, I didn't want to purchase a small refrigerator to fit this opening since we are about to change the cabinets in about 5 months. I have purchased a refrigerator to be delivered in about a month and I will need a solution before it arrives. So how do you fit a 70"H x 35.625W" in a 68"H x 34"W hole or at least my best option until I can get to the kitchen upgraded.

Remove the right side

Option 1 - Remove the right side cabinets

I am thinking that option 1, removing the right side cabinets, is the best option I have. I actually have the image showing the top section going away but I am thinking about raising it up until I get to the upgrade done.

Option 2 - Remove the left side cabinets

I am thinking this would be more work and lost storage removing this section.

Can someone with a big home improvement brain give me option 3 which is the winning solution?

SOMEONE POST OPTION 3!!!!!!!!!!

The Solution

Well, the solution ended up being just hard work. I moved the cabinets I had around the room to make a better triangle design and used all I could. I ordered 5 new upper cabinets in maple unfinished and painted everything to make it match.

I tiled the backsplash, added granite, under-cabinet lights, framed in a pantry and slowly replacing the appliances. With all this done I have a new kitchen for little money. If I had hired a contractor to do this update it would have cost $20K but with 3 hard months of work I got this kitchen for little money. My wife and I are really happy with the new look.

Option 1.5

If it ain't broke don't fix it. For five little months, which will go by in a flash while you settle into your house. Leave the old fridge where it sits. Put the new fridge in the garage if it must be deleivered before you complete a remodel. It will give you two fridges to store your stuff in for awhile which is a bonus if you shop at Costco like I do. Your Idea of moving the upper cabinets up is a good one. However its the lower cabinet that will be trouble as it is probably an unfished space below and behind it.

KEY POINT MISSED... I will not have the little frig

Hey Handyman. Thanks for the advice but I will not have the little frig once I move in. I will be using this in the kitchen either in that location with modifications or on the oposite wall where there is space. I really need a creative solution to the cabinets. Thanks!

www.freecycle.org

Get a new old fridge to use for a few months for free then re-free cycle it.

Kitchen Cabinet Resolve

If you can remover the cover of the radiator or slide it over an inch, you can reposition the right side of the cabinets as well to accomodate the frig. and use a filler piece on the left side to fill in the gap between the side pantry and top cabinet which would not be that noticeable. That would be my suggestion without having to demo the whole thing.

A possible solution?

Try to take your top cabinet above your refridgerator apart to se if you have enough space on top and bottom to cut the doors at the top and bottom and also you might have to do that same to the frame around it as well.
Make sure if you need lets say 2" that you cut only 1" from top and bottom.
