redo of ugly white laminate kitchen sink cabinet

I had el cheapo white laminate sink cabinets that were falling apart the laminate was coming off the particle board underneath,we have no money my husband is disabled and I stay home home with him and so replacement was virtually out of the question so I glued the laminate back down to the particle board with some good epoxy and used clamps to hold it place. Then I bought some deglosser available at any good hardware store usually about $5(watch the fumes!) I used this to take the shiney surface off the laminate, and then I lightly sanded it,and spray painted the cabinets green with el cheapo wal-mart spray paint and then streaked it with another color green enamel paint to make like a wood grain.I removed the doors to paint them,I always lightly sand between each paint step to give tooth for the next application of paint, then I started adding checkerboard borders and my handdrawn chicken design. You could use any type of design to match your decor but I have a country kitchen with green and white and red in it so this was my choice, you could even just paint a solid color if you chose to ( I used el cheapo acrylic craft paint to paint the chickens on) and painted it on,final step was to seal with 3 coats of minwax helmsman indoor outdoor spar urethane get all edges and cracks so the water from the sink won't undermine the laminate again. Can't draw ?? Thats not a problem! You could glue wall paper chickens or anything on the door and seal it or stencil whatever you like on the door,or even just paint one solid color and seal it.The important thing is to follow all the instructions on the paint and deglosser to the letter! Don't forget to lightly sand to give tooth for the paint application,I mean lightly,I have used a brown paper bag even to sand lightly between coats.I did these cabinets about 3 months ago and they are working out fine and Im planning on doing a white laminate el cheapo dresser next.Don't skimp on the sealer thats the most vital step to keep the project waterproof and scratch free and intact!!! I don't know how long these cabinets will last, but this was my last resort and Im hoping for at least 3 more years of use.Next is the other dresser and then Im going to attempt to paint my old vinyl tile floor!
