Any home improvement project should have surface protection protecting all surfaces. During construction, accidents happen and for a couple bucks you can protect the floor, tub, cabinet, counter, and carpet. I have found that using the concrete surface already present, or using a concrete overlay saved money. We put a decorative stamped overlay in our bathroom, stained it with a terra cotta acid stain color, and sealed. It was done quickly, and at a fraction of the cost for tile.
