This magnificent property, known as the Hambley-Wallace House, has been in the loving care of the Leo Wallace family for the past eighty-one years. It has been a landmark in Rowan County since the beginning of it's construction in 1901, and is recognized as one of the true "jewels" of the city. Set apart by its scale and large lot, this mansion is among the most ambitious of its era in the Piedmont of North Carolina. It is an unusually handsome and lavishly detailed Chateauesque style mansion in a suburban estate-like setting on grounds that are enclosed by a low granite wall. The house stands stately, but unpretentiously, in a neighborhood of stylish, substantial brick, frame, and stone houses from the 1810's to the 1930's. The home was designed by Charlotte architect Charles Hook and constructed by the Lazenby Brothers Construction Company. The landscaping was designed by Thomas Meehan & Sons, of Philadelphia. Built of the finest materials available in the opening years of the 20th century, and constructed with sure, skilled craftsmanship by a local building company which demonstrated an unerring knowledge in its handling of granite, brick, slate, stained glass, and both native and imported woods. The house survives today in a truly remarkable, high state of preservation which reflects the very intelligent, unstinting stewardship of the Wallace Family for who it has been a family home for eight-one years. The house is listed on the Register of the National Trust for Historic Places and is a Pivotal structure in the West Square Historic District of Salisbury. The house is covered by a tall hipped slate roof, the three storied house stands on a raised basement. The first story is finished in ashlar granite while the second-story facade and all remaining elevations are sheathed in a beautiful pumpkin-colored brick set in tinted mortar. These brick elevations are enlived with slight offsets & the use of granite quoins and belt courses which both enfold the elevations and define the main levels of the house and enhance the window opening and other architectural features. The third floor level of the house is enriched with features of the Chateauesque style. An offset tower is finished with an octagonal turreted roof with terminates with cresting. The third level also has finished gable-front wall dormers. A combination of exterior and interior chimneys rise above the house's roofline and are finished with granite belt courses. The front facade is dominated by the handsome one-story arcaded porch which carries fully across the front of the house. A pair of cast-iron lamps rises from the front of the scrolled ends of the granite steps that leads to the arched covered porch and a double-leaf oak front door, with the original oak screened doors. The interior of the home presents elegantly appointed & spacious room that contain design elements fitting such a residence. You'll find flooring that includes inlaid mosaic tiles featuring a Greek key & ribbon design, hardwoods, terrazzo, & marble. Many of the downstairs ceilings are accented by classical Rococo Revival-style plaster ceilings, and panel and beam ceilings, all of which have egg-and-dart molding. Doorways into the parlor, library and dining room have heavily molded classical enfacements and are fitted with pocked doors each having five horizontal panels with egg-and-dart moldings. There are 10 handsome fireplaces with mantels or over-mantels in the home. Two of these are set up to burn gas logs. The stained glass throughout the house is exceptional. From the entry vestibule to the upper most room stain glass abounds. Perhaps the most outstanding of this glass is located in the reception hall which engages the imposing two-story staircase. This staircase rises with a series of landings illuminated by a large stained glass window to the second-story sitting hall. There is both beautiful stained glass and leaded glass in the formal dining room. The family bedrooms are on the second level of the home and accessible from the large open sitting room at the top of the grand staircase. In addition to the front staircase, there are two additional rear stairways for convenient family access to these rooms. Seven of the eight bedrooms are located on the second floor. Each of these rooms are spacious in size, most have fireplaces, wood or carpeted flooring and access to an adjoining bath. Several bedrooms have their own dressing rooms with built-in wardrobes, mirrored doors, drawers and cabinets. Gorgeous stained and/or leaded glass is found in most of the bedrooms/baths. The third floor is accessed by way of stairs located off of the second floor sitting area. There is a very spacious room at the top of the stairs that is an ideal game room. It has the benefit of a very large & original skylight that offers a generous amount of natural light. There are large storage closets off of three sides of the room. Also on this level, located in the tower, is the eighth bedroom with fireplace, stained glass windows and a connecting original bath. Down the hallway is another large walk-in storage closet. This magnificant home is located in beautiful West Square Historic District and about a 5-10 stroll to the center of downtown Salisbury where you'll find 75 shops and 15 restaurants. A variety of churches are also within this walking area, as is the public library. Salisbury is a historic city of about 28,000 and is located about mid-way between the cities of Charlotte, Winston Salem and Greensboro, North Carolina. mhawkins@salisbury.net
