Early Confederate Civil War Battle Flag

This is an early Civil War, circa 1860-1862, period made and used First National 'Stars & Bars' flag. Dimensions of this flag are 19 1/2 inches wide by 27 inches long. It is base stitched to a piece of unbleached muslin ready for framing. Gauze like fabric appears homespun completely hand sewn, all the seams are done in the 'French' folded over style. Sewing is a double parallel inline stitch for the seams. The fly seam has unraveled but where it was folded and previously sewn is visible in the cloth along the fly edge in close examination. Stars are sewn mirror image on both sides of the canton, done with an overhand stitch and appear to be silk. The body of the canton is made from two pieces of cloth with the seam traversing the canton in the center horizontally. A beautiful example of a period made and used battle flag
