Gilt Bronze & Patinated Clock ERATO by ROBIN ca 1830 This gorgeous Large Charles X Clock is made in France around 1830. Clock is surmounted by gilt bronze stature of ERATO. ERATO was one of the nine Muses, the goddesses of music, song and dance. Her name means "the lovely" or "beloved" from the Greek word eratos. In Classical times--when the Muses were assigned specific artistic spheres--she was named Muse of erotic poetry and mimic imitation and represented holding a lyre. Silvered engraved dial is with Roman numerals and normal wear due to the age. French movement is with silk suspension and in working condition striking on the large bell at 1/1 and ½ hours. The movement is made by the famous generation of clock makers Viel-Robin. Robert Robin (1742-1799) has established the business already in the 18n century in Paris.
