Islamic Polychrome Bowl From Tunisia 1000 AD

You are viewing a very rare, beautiful and fascinating ancient Islamic Ceramic Bowl dating to 1000 - 1100 AD. This lovely and extremely rare bowl is painted internally in brown manganese and turquoise, under a clear lead glaze. Initially from Tunisia, North Africa. At the time of production of ceramics such as this, Islamic culture was arguably the most enlightened in the world. Arab scholars such as Dreses produced the first known global map and others such as Algazel wrote extensively on law, theology and philosophy. Indeed, without the Ancient Islamic world many famous Ancient Greek texts would now be lost. Large portions of Aristotle and other landmark Greek treatises are known only in Arabic. Ancient Islamic Ceramics are becoming ever-more popular on the International art market as the sophistication of Ancient Islamic culture and the beauty of its art becomes increasingly appreciated by western Europeans and North Americans. Many Western museums, for the first time are now exhibiting these glorious and fascinating ceramics. This increasing popularity is reflected in the gradually escalating prices such ceramics are achieving. Indeed, Ancient Islamic wares in general are widely believed to constitute one of the best forms of investment in the Antiquities market as a whole. For reference please see Bonhams, Wednesday 17th October 2001 and Thursday 29th April 2004, where the escalation in the value of these ceramics can be appreciated, with similarly sized Islamic Ceramics to the present example selling for in excess of £2000 (US$3500). Height: 3 3/8 inches. Diameter: 6 1/8 inches. Restored from large fragments. A Museum quality piece. Provenance: This vessel was part of a large collection of Islamic ceramics acquired legally on the London Art market in the 1950's and subsequently passing into the collection of a London Gentleman. Relevant Bibliography: Two books by the pre-eminant authority on Islamic Ceramics, Geza Fehervari are well-worth consulting: "Ceramics of the Islamic World in the Tareq Rajab Museum" and "Pottery of the Islamic World". We only sell genuine ancient art, fully guaranteed. Please show an expert for peace of mind. We purchased a collection of these Islamic ceramics and had them randomly tested by thermoluminescence at Oxford to verify authenticity and age. The samples all came positive, and we are happy to provide a copy of a relevant TL certificate to the new owner.
