This is an ancient brick with Sumerian type text done in the Akkadian cuneiform style of writing. The Akkadians adopted the older Sumerian cuneiform system which developed into the ancient Assyrian language around 2000 B.C. The adaptation of the Sumerian language into the Akkadian occurred around 2600 B.C. The Akkadian developed into the Assyrian language circa 2000 B.C. A partial translation of the Sumerian inscriptions cut from the center of the brick reads as follows: "Enlil-Bani the shephard of Nippurs the former (who brings forth) mighty barley for UR. Who purifies the regulations of the city Eridu agreeable lord of the city ISIN, King of Sumer and Akkad, favorite space of the Goddess INANNA."
