Rare Chinese Han Dyn. Pou, ca. 100BC-AD100

A fine example of a Late Western/Early Eastern Han Dynasty pou, ca. 100BC-AD100. Dimensions: 13" tall, 13.5" widest. This pou was excavated from Jiangsu province in Northern China. Made of high-fired, beige or gray stoneware. Originally the top of the bu was glazed, but unfortunately, being buring in a tomb for over 1900 years, the glaze became brittle and flaked off. Still, without the original glaze, this is a very fine example of this classic form. This pou is broader than it is tall. It has 2 large, molded and carved mask handles. There are 3 sets of raised ridges circumventing above the shoulder of the bu. Withing these ridges are incised bird decorations.
