Song Dyn. Junyao (guan) Flower Pot, ca

A fine and rare Junyao (guan) six-foliate flower pot, number 6, ca. Dimensions: 9-1/16" long, 7-5/16" deep, 5-11/16" tall. Junyao is one of the 5 famous imperial kilns that existed in China during the Song dynasty. This junyao flower pot is "guan", official ware made for the Imperial Court and bears the engraved number 6 on the bottom of the pot. The tall flaring flower pot has 6 foliate petals and lipped mouth rim. The glaze is fiery and lustrous. The colors on the outer pot are predominately feathery purple-red with blushes of sky-blue and white. The Inner pot blushes a sky blue with amber and purple highlights. The inner foot area is glazed in olive green with brown mottling. It is in the brown mottling you can see the engraved number 6, represents the number of the imperial potters who made this pot. There are 2 theories of what the inscribed numbers mean. The first theory is that on any given work day, the Imperial kilns requested no more than 10 potters. For a given work day, numbers were assigned on a first come, first serve basis. These numbers were either selected by the individual potter or the kiln director. At the end of the workday, the potters will be credited all pieces bearing their number.Another popular theory, which does not seem very plausible with many (including us), is that this number indicates the size of the associated piece. The numbers used were 1 to 10, with 10 being the largest. We find this flawed and not true. We have handled several similar designed, Imperial Jun yao pieces bearing the same engraved numbers, but varying "greatly" in size! We feel confident that these numeric marks indicate something other than size distinction, and is more likely associated to the individual potters. The mouth rim glaze bears amazing crystalline patterns (see enlargement #6). This flower pot stands on three glazed feet. The feet are completely glazed with exception to the bottom of each foot revealing a warm brown clay color. A magnificent Junyao piece and a truly rare find!b/11
