A fine Tang dynasty earthenware tomb figure, ca.AD618-906. Dimensions 15" tall, 5" wide, 4" deep. Objects like these are known as Mingqi, specifically made for burial objects. It was believed that an object's/individual's (like a servent) essence would be taken into the after-life by the deceased. This figure of a foriegn fighter, (possibly Dutch), is standing in a fighting posture, slightly leaning and with hands raised, fists clenched. He has a full beard and is wearing a hat. His has a very intense gaze. The figher is made of a grayish-beige earthenware. There is fine sandy deposition (from the tomb) clinging to the figure. The figure has great detail and expression.
