Victorian photograph, CDV (cartes-de-visite), circa late 1800s, of a group of women and men in a garden with a dog. One man is reading from a large book. The dog is large and appears to be some type of retriever or working dog. Only idenitifcation on the card is "England", which is handwritten on the back. These cards became popular in the mid-1850s. They were the size of a visiting card, whichÂ--in large part due to Napoleon III's visit to Disdéri's studioÂ--became enormously popular and were traded among friends and visitors.
