A History of Our Own Times. Justin McCarthy, five Volumes Complete in Fine Condition. Volumes IV & V First Editions. New York: Harper & Brothers, No Dust Jackets, 2337 pgs (Index). Originally, The set consisted of 3 volumes only (published in 1889), but later 2 more volumes were added. This set of five was published in 1905. A complete set of these Five Volumes in Fine Condition is most unusual. Volume I & I: From the accession of Queen Victoria to the General Election of 1880. Volume III: From 1880 to the Diamond Jubilee. Volume IV & V: From the Diamond Jubilee, 1897 to the accession of King Edward VII. Justin McCarthy (1830 Â- 1912) was an Irish Nationalist historian, novelist, politician, and MP in the House of Commons of the UK as a Liberal Home Ruler. His most important work is his History of Our Own Times, which treats of the period between Queen VictoriaÂ's accession to the accession of King Edward VII. Easily and delightfully written, and on the whole eminently sane and moderate, these volumes form a brilliant piece of narrative from a Liberal standpoint.
