Now de-acquisitioned and available for sale.The Tang dynasty is considered by scholars a golden age in China that witnessed a prosperous culture, economy, diplomacy, and politics under a centralized government. A new sensitivity emerged on the part of the upper-class gave rise to new boldness, passion in art that is notably reflected in their use of funerary art. This jar was made for the purpose of accompanying the deceased into the next world. It would have been place in the tomb, often with offerings, to serve the deceased in his eternal journey. This jar exhibits a dense brown-lead glaze that covers the entire exterior stopping just above the foot. There is a ring of clay adhering to the center of the foot. This was used to keep the jar from sticking to the kiln surface when firing. The glaze shows signs of wear from tomb burial.This piece is authenticated and includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Mr. Cui, current director of the Beijing Capital Museum, China. He is also a renown appraiser of Chinese porcelain.
