With the arrival of spring flowers, many turn to their lawn to look for signs of life. And while it can be exciting to see the world come alive after winter dormancy, looking out at a dull brown lawn might be disheartening. The great news is that grass bounces back after a long winter, especially with the right care. Spring months are some of the most active—and critical—for establishing a lawn care routine that will ensure the grass will be healthy all season long. These tips and tricks will have you there in no time.

Is your lawn really dead, or just dormant?

After a winter of looking out the window at grass that’s turning yellow and eventually a brown lawn, when spring weather starts to roll around there’s nothing like seeing that grass start to green up. The process can take time, so just because the sun is shining and the grass is brown, this doesn’t mean it’s dead. It’s more likely gone dormant for the winter. Depending on the climate zone, grass can go dormant when temperatures get low. Most grass, especially if it’s the right grass for the zone, will come back to life in the spring when temperatures rise consistently again. To check and see if the grass is dormant or dead, pull a few blades or a small section out. If it’s hard to unearth and the roots stay put, the grass is alive. If it’s easy to pull out, then it’s likely dead grass.

Cool-season grasses grow where temperatures dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods and grass goes dormant. In areas where temperatures dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, lawns are often planted with warm-season grasses, which can lose their green color. There are plenty of places in the mid-zone, which is why it’s important to get the right blend of grass for the climate.

Before You Begin…

Before taking steps to revive grass, it is wise to do a soil test. This will help determine the health of the lawn and what nutrients are—or aren’t—available in the soil. Some lawn care kits, like Sunday, include a soil test kit that allows an analysis of the soil and recommends fertilizer based on the needs of the lawn. A high soil pH can mean alkaline soil, which can slow the growth of grass. There are additional steps to take, whether you need to lower your soil’s pH or raise it.

7 Crucial Tasks for Conquering Lawn Dormancy Fast

Following certain steps can help bring your grass back to life, so you can enjoy a lush, green lawn sooner than you think.

1. Reduce stress on the lawn by removing debris like branches or leaves.

No matter how much yard cleanup took place last season, there’s always something to tidy up after winter fades. Make sure grass has room to grow by removing leaves and picking up winter debris such as branches and sticks. Use a regular leaf rake for this portion of the job and avoid getting too aggressive; just give the grass a good fluffing to make space for light and nutrients to reach the roots.

2. Dethatch the lawn to eliminate excess plant material that is blocking water and sunlight from reaching the grass’s roots.

After raking lightly, take note of any areas where the rake got stuck or raking wasn’t as easy. This indicates areas in the lawn that will require dethatching.

“While you should be gentle when raking your grass, don’t be afraid to get into it if you find grass blades that have matted together,” says Jeremy Yamaguchi, former CEO of Lawn Love. “Caused by snow molds, excessive watering, and compacted soil, matted grass can prevent new grass from sprouting.”

Dethatching is best done with a dethatching tool, which is essentially a sharp-bladed rake. A heavy-duty garden rake can substitute for this. Try to avoid dethatching too early in the season or after heavy rain because it’s easy to damage grass that is trying to establish itself.

3. Weeds will need to be removed to reduce the grass’s competition for nutrients. Spraying a natural herbicide may be most efficient for dealing with significant weed growth.

While raking and dethatching, take note of any early-season weeds that may already be taking root. Remove them by hand, using a weeding tool. Aggressive and fast-growing weeds can compete with new grass for vital nutrients. In areas with winter dormancy, however, it’s not always easy to tell if roots are taking hold early in the season. For this reason, some gardeners opt for a pre-emergent herbicide. Most lawn care pros agree, though, that unless there is a known weed problem, it’s best to exercise caution if using any herbicides. “Some problems arise from overuse of weed killer and lawn treatment,” says Quinten O’Dea of Q&A Landscaping, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “I’ve seen new grass die out from weed killer.”

4. If the lawn’s soil is hard or compact, aerating it will improve drainage and oxygen flow. This creates healthier growing conditions for grass.

Compacted soil can make it difficult for nutrients, air, and water to get down into the grassroots. An aeration tool puts holes in the lawn to allow these to penetrate down into the grassroots. When this happens, the grass is encouraged to grow deep roots, which in turn impacts the health of the lawn. Properly aerated lawns don’t require as much water and are less vulnerable to disease and pests. Even if the soil isn’t heavily compacted, aerating will benefit the grass in the coming months.

Aeration tools include inexpensive handheld versions, shoes with spikes that allow you to get those steps in while walking around the lawn, and power tools that can cover a larger area in less time.

5. Patches of bare ground or dead grass can be repaired by overseeding.

After raking, dethatching, and aerating, look for any areas of the lawn that are bare or that look thinner than others. Early spring is a great time to overseed areas of the lawn

because seeds can get a head start over any weeds that may blow in for the summer, and potential spring rains can help seeds germinate. Overseeding can be done by hand or with the use of a seed spreader. It’s a straightforward process: simply walk around and spread the grass seeds on the lawn, especially on the bare spots and patches.

Water thoroughly after seeding, and then keep the soil evenly moist. How much water this will require will depend on the climate and weather. If there’s no rain, aim for watering 10 to 15 minutes three times a day until you see significant growth, which is typically between 1 and 2 weeks. Remember, the goal here is to keep the surface moist. Avoid walking on areas that have been reseeded until the grass is established.

PRO TIP
“Most bags of grass seed have more than enough seed to cover a few patchy areas so there’s usually quite a bit of seed left over. I use the rest of that seed to overseed the rest of my lawn. I concentrate first on the patchiest areas and then take handfuls and lightly spread seeds throughout my entire lawn. It gives my lawn that lush appearance and helps cut down on weeds.”
—Amber Guetebier, BobVila.com contributor and former landscape and floral designer

6. Fertilizing the lawn will encourage growth and balance out any nutrient deficiencies in the soil.

Once those new grass seeds have been established, the rest of the lawn should be greening up, which is an excellent time to fertilize. The right lawn fertilizer will have a balance of nitrogen (for leaf growth), phosphorus (an essential for establishing healthy roots), and potassium (for overall health and a boost in resisting lawn stressors such as diseases, common garden pests, and heat stress or damage). This is also why a soil test is helpful. Based on the results, there may be a need for more nitrogen, the soil may be too alkaline, and so on.

The exact time to apply fertilizers depends on the climate, weather, and what type of fertilizer (liquid vs. granular), but the general rule of thumb is to apply when grass has started to green up. If you’re using a granular fertilizer, water the lawn thoroughly after applying, being careful not to flood the lawn and wash away all the product. If you’re using a liquid fertilizer, this step is not necessary.

7. Addressing persistent lawn problems such as disease or pest damage may require the application of specialized treatments.

Lawns can fall vulnerable to a host of common pests and diseases, including snow mold, pests like lawn grubs, and weeds. Depending on what the issue is, special treatments may be required. For example, crabgrass is one of the most common issues for lawns in all growing climates. A little crabgrass can be pulled by hand, but it can quickly spread.

The most important and timely application to prevent crabgrass begins in the early spring, says Mark Marino, owner of Lawn Phix, a lawn care company based in Bellingham, Massachusetts. “Crabgrass will begin germinating when soil temperatures hit 55 degrees and up for a few consecutive days.” If crabgrass has been an issue in the past, Marino recommends getting a jump start on it. “I prefer pre-emergent herbicides with the active ingredient prodiamine (Barricade) in the early spring.”

From Surviving to Thriving: How to Maintain a Lush Lawn

Once you’ve taken these seven steps to getting your lawn past dormancy, it’s time to think about maintaining its beauty throughout the spring and summer months.

Watering deeply about once a week will keep the lawn hydrated without oversaturating it.

A good rule of thumb is to aim to give grass about 1 inch of water each watering session, watering once a week. This may need to increase or decrease depending on rain, weather, time of year, shade and sun conditions, and temperature fluctuations.

PRO TIP
“Try this trick to see how long to water to achieve that 1-inch mark: Place tin cans (like a tuna can) around the lawn, then water for increments of 5 minutes, checking to see how long it takes to reach that 1-inch mark. For example, if it takes 15 minutes to get half an inch, then water twice a week for 15 minutes, or once a week for 30 minutes.”
—Amber Guetebier, BobVila.com contributor and former landscape and floral designer

Regular mowing can promote healthy grass growth and prevent the spread of weeds.

Mowing is not just for the peak of summer. Keeping grass mowed regularly will help promote healthy growth and give a lawn that lush, thick appearance. While different grasses prefer different lengths, aim to trim about one-third of the length of the grass blades each time. Longer grass helps keep the soil moist and shades the roots, making it more tolerant to periods of drought.

“Remember to clean and service your lawn mower, particularly the blades, which need to be sharp and clean,” says Marino. Dull blades will tear the grass rather than give it a clean cut, and mowing with a dull blade means grass will need more time to recover. Plus, sharp blades cut faster and will reduce mowing time overall.

How I—a Lawn Care Expert—Revive My Lawn After Winter

I live in a climate that has very cold winters (Minnesota), so in addition to the usual winter dormancy I am often dealing with things like late spring snowstorms and snow mold. On the plus side, that means I also have lots of time to prep the lawn before the growing season takes off. I’ve tried a variety of products and methods over the years. Two things have been critical in ensuring my lawn looks good by the end of May: fertilizing early and overseeding.

Two years ago I signed up for a Sunday lawn care subscription service, and I have been really happy with the results. It’s very non-intimidating, which means that it’s an excellent choice for those new to lawn care, and it’s considered one of the best DIY lawn care programs. Each spring I’ve sent in a new soil sample for analysis, which helps Sunday determine if my lawn will need any specific additional nutrients. Then all I have to do is open the box and spray the fertilizer within the recommended time frame. I have signed up to get text reminders, too, because my own lawn care is often a task that ends up low on my priority list, especially in the spring. I’m an experienced landscaper but have only lived in the Zone 4 climate for a few years and am still learning the subtleties of late-spring thaw. For this reason, I love the recommendations for the suggested application time frames—they change a little each year!

The biggest difference I’ve seen in the health of my lawn is overseeding in early spring. I’ve skipped this step in the past, and it took my lawn at least 3 weeks longer to look as good. Plus, when I don’t overseed I’m battling more bare spots throughout the season. I tend to have the same patchy places each year due to snow mold, salt runoff near the main walkway, and heavy foot traffic. I also put a small ice rink on our lawn every year, and there are usually at least two places on the lawn that seem to suffer from it, probably due to snow mold.

I sprinkle grass seed all over the lawn, with an emphasis on patchy places. The best time to do this is just after your lawn is starting to look a little green so that you can see which areas need the most attention. Sunday supplies the right seeds in my kit and provides instructions about when and how to apply them. Some people use a seed spreader, but honestly, I just use my hands so I can add a little extra seed where I need it most. Sunday fertilizer needs to be applied when temperatures reach between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, so I have a good month window to apply the seed Sunday sends before I can spray the fertilizer.

The Sunday products are very easy to use: You just attach the pouch to your hose-end sprayer and water your lawn. Mine takes about 30 minutes, and it’s actually quite a relaxing task. I was initially skeptical about the liquid fertilizer application, but I’ve found it to be much easier to apply, especially having pets and kids on my lawn. With this type of application there’s no granular mess to contend with.

Highlights

  • The typical cost of pest control in Alabama ranges from $123 to $148, while the average cost is $135.
  • The exact cost of pest control for Alabama residents will vary depending on the type of pest and treatment, the size of the home, the frequency of service, the size of the infestation, the accessibility of the pests, and the home’s geographic location.
  • Some common signs of a pest infestation include droppings, nests, gnaw marks, excessive dirt and grime, hollow wood, unusual noises, unpleasant smells, and visible pest sightings.
  • Eradicating a minor pest infestation may be a DIY project for an Alabama homeowner, but larger or more serious infestations are best left to a professional.

Alabama’s warm climate offers a haven for many insects and pests, some of which have no problem taking up residence in a home for food, shelter, and water. Common pests in Alabama include bees, wasps, ants, bed bugs, termites, and cockroaches, and getting rid of them once they’re in a house is usually top priority. But how much is pest control in the Yellowhammer State? The average cost for a one-time treatment is $135, but the cost can range from $123 to $148. The total cost of pest control for homes can be less than $100 for minor infestations, but it can be more than $2,000 for major infestations.

Factors in Calculating Alabama Pest Control Costs

Alabama’s year-round warm weather means that pests can show up at any time and create issues in a home. Factors that impact pest control cost include the type of pest and the treatment needed, the accessibility of the affected area, the home’s location, repairs that resulted from the infestation, and pest prevention measures.

Primary Factors

There are several factors that can influence the cost of pest control in Alabama. One of the biggest factors is the type of pest and the type of treatment used, but other factors (such as the frequency of treatment and the size of the home) will also come into play.

  • Pest type: Alabama’s warm climate allows many species of insects, rodents, and other types of pests to thrive year-round. The cost to exterminate them is often dependent on what type of pest has invaded the home.
  • Treatment type: Pest control pricing will depend on the type of treatment needed to rid the home of pests. Treatments fall into one of three categories—physical, chemical, and biological. Physical treatments focus on blocking pests from entering the home, chemical treatments are applied to kill pests or further deter them, and biological methods use natural predators to control the unwanted pest population.
  • Service frequency: In some cases, a single treatment may be enough to handle the pest problem, and single visits average $135, but they can also cost less. Repeat visits can cost as little as $30 but an initial service fee may be assessed.
  • Home size: The home size can affect the average cost of pest control because the larger the home, the more materials or chemicals will be needed.
  • Infestation size: A large pest infestation will likely cost more to treat than a small pest infestation. And the size of the infestation isn’t necessarily dependent on the size of the house, so the pest exterminator will assess the infestation and determine the course of action and the cost.
  • Accessibility: If the pests are outdoors and the pest control company can easily access the area for treatment, pest control can cost less than if the pests are hiding and the treatment needs to be done in a hard-to-access place such as an attic or crawl space.
  • Location: The Alabama city in which the pest control measures are taking place also affects the cost of pest control services. The following are a few Alabama cities and the estimated pest control cost in each.
CityAverage Pest Control Cost
Birmingham$82 to $177
Huntsville$71 to $161
Mobile$132 to $150
Montgomery$85 to $132

Secondary Factors

In addition to the primary factors that determine pest control pricing, there are a few secondary factors. These factors aren’t related to the actual extermination or removal of the pests, but they still need to be taken into account as they can affect the overall cost.

  • Pest damage repairs: The amount of damage that pests do to a home will affect the cost to repair it. For example, termite damage can be expensive to remedy, costing between $600 and $3,000, while damage to the soffit and fascia caused by the removal of a wasp nest removal may only cost between $7 and $40 per linear foot to repair, and repairs may only be needed on a small section.
  • Cleaning and sanitization services: Again, depending on the pest, there may not be many cleaning or sanitizing costs required. This can change, however, if the infestation consists of rodents, termites, or other destructive pests. Cleaning costs can fall between $120 and $400.
  • Pest prevention: The best way to avoid the costs of extermination services is to keep the pests out in the first place. Pest control companies can assess the property for vulnerabilities and put measures in place to prevent infestation.

Pest Control Cost in Alabama by Type of Pest

Alabama’s warm, moist climate is a haven for many types of pests. Knowing which pests may pose a threat can help homeowners be prepared to tackle pest control for residential homes and give them an idea of pest control prices.

  • Ants: Ant infestations can merely be a nuisance, but some species of ants cause structural damage to the home or can be a danger to humans and animals if they sting or bite.
  • Bed bugs: While bed bugs are relatively rare in Alabama (with no cities in the state ranking in the top 50 for bed bugs) that doesn’t mean they won’t hitch a ride back in a suitcase after a trip, which can lead to the need for pest control treatment.
  • Bees and wasps: Bees and wasps are common in Alabama and can post a serious threat to humans if they are allowed to live in a hive or nest near the house.
  • Cockroaches: Cockroaches are also common in Alabama, especially German cockroaches. Not only are they annoying, but they can also spread disease.
  • Fleas: Fleas can take a ride on pets and end up in the house. When they bite people they leave behind small, itchy red bumps and can carry disease.
  • Mosquitoes: Alabama’s warm and humid climate is a haven for mosquitoes—and this type of pest can carry diseases such as West Nile and Zika viruses.
  • Rodents: Rodents like the house mouse, Norway rat, and roof rat are common in Alabama and can make their way into the house, especially in search of warmth during cooler weather.
  • Scorpions: Alabama has two native species of scorpions—the Hentz striped scorpion and the southern unstriped scorpion. They’re both small and nonaggressive, but they will sting if they feel threatened.
  • Silverfish: Because silverfish prefer high humidity and warm temperatures, they often find their way into homes in Alabama.
  • Small animals: Several types of wild animals can invade an Alabama home, including squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and opossums.
  • Spiders: Spiders may not seem like cause for too much concern, but Alabama is home to the brown recluse and the black widow, two very poisonous spiders.
  • Termites: The two main types of termites found in Alabama are the drywood termite and subterranean termite, with the southeastern drywood termite most often found in southern Alabama. Formosan termites are of particular concern and have been reported in 12 counties in Alabama.

Do I need pest control in Alabama?

There are a number of signs that a homeowner needs pest control in Alabama. Homeowners will want to contact a professional as soon as they notice signs of a pest infestation. A professional will conduct a pest inspection and advise on the best course of action as well as discuss how much pest control is. In many cases, the cost of the pest inspection will be waived if the homeowner hires the company to take care of their pest problem.

  • Droppings: Rodents and small animals leave behind droppings that can be as small as a grain of rice in the case of mice and up to 2 or 3 inches long in the case of raccoons. Droppings can carry disease, so they can pose a risk of illness if not cleaned up quickly. They can also be a sign that pests have moved in.
  • Nests: Squirrels, mice, and rats often build nests, along with bees and wasps. If a homeowner comes across a pest’s nest, chances are they’ve made themselves at home and it’s time to call animal relocation specialists or bug exterminators.
  • Gnaw marks: Rats and other rodents love to gnaw on almost anything. So if a homeowner sees gnaw marks on wood, drywall, newspapers, wires, or cardboard, they may have some unwanted guests.
  • Excessive dirt and grime: Some pests, like rats and cockroaches, leave behind a greasy residue and brown marks on their typical path through the house.
  • Hollow wood: While a homeowner doesn’t have to knock on all the wood in their house, if they suspect termites, tapping on areas and listening for a hollow sound could indicate that they have a termite infestation that requires the assistance of a pest control company.
  • Unusual noises: If a homeowner hears any movement or scurrying in the walls or ceiling, they may have rodents or small mammals making themselves at home in their home.
  • Unpleasant smells: Droppings and urine left behind by pests on the move or in their nests can lead to unpleasant smells throughout the house or in certain areas. This is a sign that a homeowner needs to call pest control.
  • Visible sightings: Pests will likely remain unseen if possible, but if homeowners do spot them, it’s time to call in a professional.

DIY vs. Hiring a Professional for Pest Control in Alabama

There are definitely DIY measures that can be taken to control pests in Alabama. Maintaining exterior landscaping and keeping branches away from the roof can make it harder for rodents and small animals to enter the home. Cleaning up after meals and making sure there aren’t any leftovers or crumbs lying around can deter hungry pests from using a home as an all-night diner. And repairing or blocking any holes, even small ones, can deter pests from coming in. Homeowners can also look into the best DIY pest control services (such as Sunday) to get rid of pests from their home and yard.

If the infestation has gotten out of hand or the homeowner isn’t comfortable handling it on their own, they’ll want to call in the professionals. For the best pest control, homeowners can compare nationwide companies, such as Orkin vs. Terminix, as well as contact local companies. Pest control professionals will assess the home and the infestation and then offer a course of action. While this may cost more than DIY methods, pest pros offer experience and know what to look for and the best methods to deal with the problem, making pest control worth it in many cases.

How to Save on and Pay for Pest Control in Alabama

Chances are, spending money on pest control isn’t at the top of the list of a homeowner’s expenses, but dealing with unwanted houseguests is an unfortunate reality of owning a home. With that in mind, there are a few things homeowners can do to save money on pest control and different strategies to pay for the services.

How to Save

When pests need to be removed or exterminated, the cost can come as a surprise. But saving money on pest control can make the experience a little less difficult.

  • Compare quotes. Comparing quotes from multiple pest control professionals can help Alabama homeowners find the most cost-effective company.
  • Pest-proof the house. Keeping pests away in the first place can save on pest control costs in Alabama. Ensuring that all crumbs and leftover food is cleaned up and put away, sealing any gaps, addressing any water issues, and maintaining landscaping can all make the home less inviting to would-be invaders.
  • Sign up for a pest control plan. While this may seem as if it would cost more money initially, it can actually save money in the long run. Treatment plans can cost around $30 a month and may have an additional fee for an initial visit, but regular inspections and treatments can prevent small problems from becoming big ones.
  • Go the DIY route. While Alabama homeowners can typically go to a local hardware store and buy pest control supplies—insecticides, traps, and deterrents—there are also companies that offer DIY pest control products based on a personalized plan.

How to Pay

Luckily, if a homeowner does have to pay for pest control or extermination measures, it typically falls on the lower end of home maintenance expenses, especially if the problem is caught early. Even so, paying for pest control may not fit into a homeowner’s budget, but there are a few ways to make it work.

  • Tap into savings: If a homeowner doesn’t have the funds to work pest control into their monthly budget, then taking a bit out of savings can help them cover the cost and avoid the interest they would accrue if they put it on a credit card.
  • Credit card: Homeowners who have a good credit score may qualify for a credit card with a zero-interest introductory rate. If the homeowner can pay off the card before that intro period ends, they can avoid interest altogether.
  • HUD grant: The HUD Healthy Homes Protection Grant provides funds to remove environmental and safety hazards from underserved communities in Alabama and may be able to help a homeowner pay for exterminator fees.
  • Financing or payment plan: Some pest control companies will offer financing or payment plans for pest control costs. This can allow homeowners to get the work done now and then pay it off over time.
  • Borrow from friends or family: If a homeowner is able to borrow the money from a friend or family member, that can help alleviate the immediate financial burden of paying for pest control. They’ll just want to make sure they have a repayment plan in place.

Questions to Ask About Pest Control in Alabama

Pest control typically consists of taking measures to remove and then exclude the pests or treating the home with chemicals meant to kill existings pests and possibly deter more from entering the home or yard. Because of this, it’s important for a homeowner to know exactly what’s being used and why. The following are some questions a homeowner can ask about pest control in Alabama.

  • How many treatments will be necessary?
  • What is the extent of the infestation?
  • What can I do after the infestation is taken care of to prevent future infestations?
  • What, if any, chemicals will you be using in my home and yard?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • Is the treatment safe for pets and kids?
  • Can I be home when you are treating the home?
  • Do you provide a written quote?
  • Is the inspection free or included in the total cost?
  • Do you offer a guarantee?

FAQs

Asking questions ensures homeowners will have all the information they need to handle pest control in Alabama. Because the weather is mild year-round, Alabama offers the ideal climate for a number of pests that can make their way into a home and cause damage over time. Homeowners can review the answers to the following frequently asked questions about pest control in Alabama to give them a head start on the process.

Q. Are termites a big problem in Alabama?

Unfortunately, Alabama’s weather offers ideal conditions for termites. Alabama has year-round warm weather, which allows termites to be active all year. And the high moisture that results from frequent rainfall and high humidity creates damp wood that appeals to termites. In northern Alabama where temperatures get a little cooler, termites are inactive in the winter but swarm as the weather warms up.

Q. How long does it take to get rid of termites?

Termites can take a while to get rid of, and homeowners may be dealing with damage from them for even longer. Termite treatments can take between a few days to a few months to work, and treatments often last for about 5 years. The time it takes to get rid of termites also depends on the extent of the infestation and type of termite.

Q. How often should you treat your home for termites?

Liquid termite treatments can last for 5 years, so if a homeowner doesn’t have an active infestation of termites, every 5 years should do the trick. Bait stations need to be checked every few months. But if a homeowner has an active termite infestation, they will want to work with a pest control professional to set up a treatment plan that may require more frequent treatments.

If You Have a Home to Rent Out, Here’s How Much You Can Earn as an Airbnb Host

Q: My family has a second home in a desirable location, and we have been discussing whether or not to become Airbnb hosts to rent the home when we are not using it. But start-up costs seem like they could be high, and we’re not sure whether it’s worth the trouble. How much can an Airbnb host actually make?

A: This is a common question for people to have about the best vacation rental sites such as Airbnb and Vrbo, largely because the internet is full of wild success stories. However, there are also plenty of woeful tales of short-term rental hosts who couldn’t find bookings or whose guests trashed their homes. It’s hard to gauge exactly how much profit an individual Airbnb host will make, because Airbnb profitability depends on many factors: location, market rates, the current state of the property, the maintenance and upkeep costs, and a number of other considerations. That said, a solid assessment of how each of these factors relates to the potential property listing can make it easier to estimate how much an aspiring host could earn when starting an Airbnb business. There are also some steps they can take to maximize their earnings.

Greg Davis is the senior vice president of owner growth at Evolve, a vacation rental management company with headquarters in Denver, Colorado. When it comes to maximizing earning potential, Davis advises against cutting corners to save money in the beginning. “When you’re just getting started with vacation rental, it can be tempting to skimp on some items to spare up-front costs,” he says. “But it’s more than possible to create an attractive rental property that taps into your highest income potential while avoiding overspending.”

Airbnb hosts make an average income of $924 per month by renting out their property.

While there’s an enormous variation, the Airbnb average income is approximately $924 per month. This includes all manner of Airbnb hosts—those who rent out their whole property and those who rent out a room or shared home; those in high-demand areas and those in towns without huge attractions nearby; and those who rent all year as opposed to those who rent for specified times. Considering how high and low Airbnb revenues can go, the average of $924 per month suggests that there is certainly money to be made: Almost half of all hosts make more than $500 per month. In some of the highest-earning cities, the average annual Airbnb earnings can be as much as $20,619.

This is part of the draw that many people with extra space feel when considering becoming an Airbnb host. And one of the advantages is certainly the passive aspect of Airbnb income that comes from hosting. While Airbnb start-up costs can be significant and regular maintenance work can eat into profits, most of the earning happens without the host working regular hours. However, maximizing that passive income requires hosts to make some careful choices at the outset, as well as making good decisions as the rental bookings begin.

Earnings can vary dramatically depending on the type of property and its geographic location.

Geographically, warm-weather states tend to boast the highest average Airbnb income. While snow-capped mountains are a huge draw in northern climates in the winter, their season is limited—many ski areas transition to water parks and offer gondola rides in the summer months to try to keep the tourists coming, but they just don’t have the year-round draw of sunny coastlines where people can escape from home any time of year. Southern and warm coastal areas can offer more nights for bookings in great weather, and consistent bookings equal higher profits from the best rental listing sites. Areas with commercial, natural, or tourist attractions can also pull in more nights booked. Lowest on the earnings scale are locations without obvious attractions or very limited seasons. Hosts can still make a fine profit in those areas, especially if there’s a specific seasonal attraction or the property is located near a city that hosts frequent conventions, but they won’t have the same level of profit that is generated by year-round tourism.

Even within an in-demand area, location makes a difference when it comes to making money with Airbnb. Airbnb clients are internet-savvy: they know how to check the crime rate in the neighborhood where a listing is located, and to see what types of amenities, such as restaurants, shopping, and public transit, are located nearby. Awareness of the setting of the Airbnb for owners of existing properties enables the host to find ways to offset any negative elements, such as adding security features to the home or adjusting lighting and landscaping to make the home more inviting and secure. Guests may also compare listings on Airbnb vs. Vrbo, and with this additional competition, hosts will want to make sure their property listing stands out.

Airbnb listings in areas with high short-term rental demand and relatively low housing costs tend to have the highest profits.

In general, the highest-earning vacation rentals are located in areas that attract tourists year-round and have moderately or affordably priced housing. Private room rentals tend to do best in smaller cities where rents are lower. The balance of the cost to purchase and maintain the property against the potential rental charges increases the profits when the area is attractive enough to draw a higher rental fee (especially when traditional hotels in the area are costly) but the mortgages and taxes on the property are lower.

Airbnb hosts can expect higher profits during peak seasons and over holiday weekends.

Strategic pricing is a huge component of profiting from an Airbnb listing. Rather than charging the same amount for every night of the year, a smart host uses online tools or simply surfs listings themselves to examine seasonal trends. If the Airbnb is close to a major college or university, the owner can increase the rate for move-in weekend, family weekend, and graduation, along with when any big football games are scheduled. If the property is close to a large concert venue, hosts will want to keep an eye on ticket sales for the concerts that fans will travel to see; those are weekends when people will pay more for a nearby location.

Property owners can charge higher nightly rates when local tourist attractions are busiest, and reduce rates during slow periods and midweek, when the lower rate will make the property more attractive to the smaller number of guests looking for a place to stay. Achieving this balance can be tricky: Hosts don’t want to price themselves so high that they’re skipped over by guests who can find similar lodgings for less, but they also don’t want to miss out on higher Airbnb profit periods.

A man and a woman smile while standing on a balcony.

Listings with high occupancy rates and positive guest reviews are more likely to make a profit.

High-quality pictures of the property are important because guests will be able to see themselves sunning on the balcony or curled on the comfy couch in front of a fire. But what they really want to see is how often other guests choose a particular listing and how they feel about their stay. These two items—the percentage of time the listing is booked and the reviews previous guests leave—are two of the most influential aspects of the listing.

According to Davis, “Data shows having at least 6 months of available booking dates per year is key to a rental’s success—and blocking just 3 months of your calendar could result in 28 percent less annual revenue, with that loss growing as your blocks increase.”

Guests can be pretty ruthless when they’re writing from the safety of their own home with no real obligation to the host. If they’ve liked their stay, they’re more likely to post positive reviews in hopes that they will be welcomed back. But guests who haven’t had a great experience will be honest, and guests with an axe to grind can be downright unfair, and those negative reviews can have a strong effect on potential guests.

There’s not a lot that hosts can do to prevent poor reviews other than to work hard at consistently providing what the listing offers. Responsive hosts who are available to address problems immediately (or who hire one of the best Airbnb management companies to handle such problems on their behalf) are more likely to keep their reviews positive. Airbnb does allow hosts to post public responses to reviews, so hosts can offset the potential damage of a negative review by posting a helpful reply explaining their side of the story. Taking any and all steps to make sure the property is what the guests are expecting and that their needs are met promptly will help protect ratings. So much of a rating comes from whether or not the guests’ expectations have been met, so investing in a few extra amenities can go a long way toward helping guests feel cared for, even if something goes wrong.

“Treating your guests to five-star hospitality is one of the best things you can do to make your investment worth it,” advises Davis. “Feeling cared for in your rental can encourage positive reviews, which can boost your property’s visibility and potential for more bookings, as research shows 81 percent of guests consider reviews before booking. The more positive reviews you collect, the stronger your online reputation becomes, allowing for improved profitability over time.”

Hosts will need to determine their operating costs to get a clearer picture of their estimated income.

Once a listing is up and running, the host will need to determine their operating costs to see how much of their earnings they’ll need to spend on maintaining the property. Many municipalities require short-term rental owners to obtain a business license, and many have a separate tax structure for short-term rentals on top of regular property taxes. Hosts will also want to budget for coverage from one of the best insurance companies for Airbnb hosts (such as Steadily); short-term rental properties are excluded from most homeowners and landlord insurance policies, so hosts will want to protect their property with vacation rental insurance in addition to the damage protection that Airbnb provides. Basic utilities such as Wi-Fi, electricity, gas, and water and sewer service must be covered each month as well.

One of the most significant costs of maintaining an Airbnb is the cleaning cost. It only takes one bad review that mentions dirty bedrooms, bathrooms, or kitchens to drive other potential guests away, so cleaning has to be done regularly and rigorously. The host can handle this job themselves, but many contract with a cleaning service to take care of this task, which adds to the operating costs. Airbnb hosts can add a cleaning fee to their listing, which can offset the cleaning costs. However, hosts will want to review other listings in the area to see how much hosts are charging for cleaning. Although a lower rent is attractive, being the only property in the area to tack on the cleaning fee can deter renters.

Other operating expenses include updating furniture and decor, adding extra amenities, and including technology to make the Airbnb more competitive with other properties in the area. Hosts will want to regularly stock the home with paper products, cleaning products, toiletries, and kitchen basics. Guests comparing Airbnb vs. hotel stays understand that Airbnbs are not hotel rooms, so they aren’t expecting daily maid services, but they’re more likely to leave favorable reviews when there are extra toiletries and toothbrushes in the cabinet and tea bags and coffee pods in the kitchen.

Finally, extra amenities can help make an Airbnb listing stand out. Stocking equipment for anticipated activities, such as sleds, kayaks, bikes and other sporting equipment, beach chairs, coolers, and umbrellas, can enhance a guest’s experience during their stay. A closet full of board games or a video game system can turn a disappointing rainy day into a fun family afternoon.

Davis advises hosts to study the amenities that travelers to the area seek out to help determine which amenities to supply. While catering to local interest is key, Davis also explains that there are some features that will always attract guests, regardless of the locale. “Our data shows properties with hot tubs, for instance, tend to see 29 percent more bookings throughout the year than those without,” he says. Identifying these types of amenities can help hosts choose where to spend their money to increase profitability.

Property owners will also want to familiarize themselves with Airbnb host fees.

Airbnb works by charging Airbnb fees such as a service fee, which offsets the company’s costs for management and customer service. This fee can be paid by the host, in which case it’s deducted from the guest’s payment before the host receives their payout, or split between the host and the guest. If the host covers the whole fee, it’s not actually an expenditure or amount the host has to budget to pay up front, but it does subtract from the bottom line in the payout.

When comparing Airbnb vs. Vrbo for hosts, property owners will want to note that Airbnb offers two different pricing structures (split-fee and host-only), whereas Vrbo only offers a pay-per-booking plan, which can make service fees harder to estimate.

Hosts can estimate their Airbnb earnings using an online calculator.

There are several online calculators available to help hosts estimate their potential earnings. Property owners will need to enter basic information about the property, including the location, type of listing, and number of guests who can be accommodated. The calculator will then gather local booking data from Airbnb and several of the best Airbnb alternatives. Factors that the calculator may consider include nearby occupancy rates and average nightly rates to estimate how a potential listing would fare. A calculator can’t take everything into account because it can’t see the property’s specific features that could impact its appeal to potential guests; however, it can provide a solid estimate for hosts to work from.

However, the Encode is also one of the priciest smart locks on the market, which begs the question: Is it worth it? During our testing of the best door locks, we tested the Encode ourselves to find out if it was worthy of protecting our castle.

What is the Schlage Encode?

The Encode is Schlage’s top-of-the-line smart lock. It is designed to sync with a home’s Wi-Fi network, allowing the user to control the lock from virtually anywhere using the Schlage mobile app. The app also has other features, including auto-locking and customizable scheduling. Along with using the app, the lock can also be locked or unlocked using the keypad on the lock or with a standard key. The Encode is offered in various finishes and three trim options: Camelot, which is the fancier of the three with its curved and beveled housing, and the more modern-looking Century and Greenwich options.

Installing the Schlage Encode

Installing the Encode is similar to installing any other smart lock, which is to say it can be a bit of a challenge. After removing our existing deadbolt lock, which wasn’t particularly difficult, we needed to measure the distance of the hole in our door to ensure it was compatible. Luckily, we didn’t need to make any structural changes to the door itself to install the Encode.

As with other smart locks, the Encode consists of three pieces: the exterior portion, which consists of the control pad; the interior casing, which houses the lock’s mechanical and electronic components; and the bolt mechanism, which is sandwiched between the two.

The installation only requires a screwdriver and involves just a few screws, but the process can be a little tricky. The user has to connect a backplate to the exterior faceplate using two long screws. The tricky part involves doing this while also passing the screws through a bolt. Unless you have an extra set of hands to help you, holding and aligning all these parts simultaneously can be a challenge.

You can either use the included print installation instructions as a guide or download the app and follow a step-by-step animated guide. Once the lock is installed, the app will walk you through the setup process, including creating a 4- to 8-digit code for the keypad and connecting the smart lock to your Wi-Fi network.

Using the Schlage Encode

Once the Encode is up and running, there are various ways to control it. You can lock and unlock it the old-fashioned way with a key, enter a code on the keypad, or use the app.

When you sign into the app, you’ll see a large button in the middle of the screen that displays the lock’s status. You can lock or unlock the door by simply pressing on that icon.

The app is chock full of useful features. The lock’s built-in alarm, which will go off in the event it detects a forced entry, can be turned on or off. We particularly liked the auto-lock delay, which automatically locks the door after a specified amount of time has passed. While there are other smart locks with similar auto-locking features, the Encode allows the user to set a delay ranging from as little as 15 seconds up to 10 minutes. We found this to be a useful feature for members of the household who often forget to lock the door behind them.

You can also create and delete access codes and even set individual schedules for each access code, which is a great feature if you have guests or workers who come to your home while you’re not around. A log on the app keeps track of the codes entered on the pad, allowing you to see a time-stamped record of who’s coming and going.

The only feature missing is auto unlock, which utilizes geofencing technology to allow users to unlock the door without entering a code or opening a phone app. This is a convenient feature—for example, it comes in handy when your arms are full of groceries. If auto unlock is a crucial feature for you, you can pay a little more for the Schlage Encode Plus, which allows users to open the lock by tapping it with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Schlage Encode Appearance

Smart locks are typically large, and the Schlage Encode is no exception. The large size of smart locks typically makes them something of an eyesore. Thankfully, that’s not the case with the Encode. Schlage clearly put a lot of effort into making the Encode something that will complement rather than detract from your home’s curb appeal.

Our test model was the Camelot, which features a housing with a stylish and sophisticated curved beveled edge that wraps around the housing. The keypad has a matte white background, which is less conspicuous than those with a shiny black touch pad. If you’re not into curves, the Encode also comes in Greenwich, which has cleaner lines, and the Century, which has a more contemporary look.

Since each trim style comes in multiple finishes, most people shouldn’t have a problem finding one that complements their door knob.

As with most smart locks, the interior of the Encode lock is more utilitarian. It consists of a fairly large casing that houses the lock’s motor and electronic components.

Quality of the Schlage Encode

Out of the box, the Encode feels beefier and tougher than most smart locks. We could certainly see it holding up to a lot of abuse. It boasts a Grade 1 ANSI rating, which is the highest security rating a residential lock can get. This means the lock is resistant to a variety of attacks that intruders employ to defeat locks, including forced entry, bump attacks, and picking. Because Grade 1 locks use at least five pins, it’s very difficult for a would-be thief to duplicate the key.

Is the Schlage Encode worth the money?

The Schlage Encode certainly isn’t a bargain-priced door lock, even by smart lock standards. At around $270, it’s one of the most expensive residential locks one can install on a door. That’s not to say it’s overpriced, though. Smart locks with the impressive functions and features that the Encode offers—such as customizable scheduling, auto-locking, a built-in alarm, and the ability to program unique codes for different users—carry a high price tag.

The Encode also boasts a designer look that’s versatile enough to complement different homes thanks to its three different trim styles and numerous finish options.

Couple those features with its Grade 1 ANSI security rating, and it becomes a little easier to understand why the Encode is pricey.

Should you buy the Schlage Encode?

Whether you should spring for the Encode depends on a few factors. If you’re looking for the functionality of a smart lock, the Encode has it. It’s Wi-Fi–ready, and the app is loaded with features. For example, the app lets you create unique codes and customized schedules for individual users, open and close the lock from virtually anywhere, and view a log of who’s locking and unlocking the door. There are also advanced security features, such as auto-locking and an alarm, that can be set to go off if the lock detects a forced entry.

While the Encode is one of the most expensive smart locks, it’s also one of few to offer ANSI’s Grade 1 security protection. This means it will resist efforts to defeat it better than most smart locks.

Aside from all its functional features, the Encode also looks good. Smart locks are inherently bulky. While that’s also the case with the Encode, its attractive style options make it one of the more aesthetically pleasing smart locks out there. We appreciated being able to choose from various trim styles and finish options.

If you want the functionality of a smart lock and the highest degree of protection offered by a residential door lock, and you’d like your front door to be adorned by a sleek-looking lock rather than a clunker, then the Encode is worth the investment.

That said, there are certainly more affordable smart locks on the market. August’s Wi-Fi smart lock earned high praise on our buyer’s guide, as did the Yale Assure Lock, and both cost about $100 less than the Encode. However, as a Grade 2 lock, the Yale Assure doesn’t offer the same level of security as the Encode, while the security of the August smart lock depends on the deadbolt it is paired with. And it’s worth noting that neither the Assure lock nor the August lock offers the same elegant look as the Schlage Encode.

Soundproofing panels are not just for recording studios and theaters. They can also successfully manage noise in homes and offices, making them more peaceful spaces for work or relaxation. Many are affordable and easy to install, and some provide a decorative aesthetic.

The challenge is choosing the right ones, and for those new to technical aspects such as noise reduction coefficients, the jargon can be confusing. In this article, we explain what potential buyers need to know in straightforward language. After looking at over 40 different products, we assembled this list of the best soundproofing panels for a variety of purposes.

  1. BEST OVERALL: TroyStudio Thick Acoustic Foam Panels
  2. BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK: Izo Egg Crate Foam Acoustic Panels
  3. BEST DESIGN: Bubos Decorative Art Acoustic Panels
  4. BEST FOR RECORDINGS: Auralex Studiofoam Wedgies
  5. BEST FOR OFFICES: Dekiru Soundproofing Insulation Panels
  6. BEST COLOR RANGE: Sonic Acoustics Hexagon Soundproofing Panels
  7. BEST LARGE PANEL: ATS Acoustics Soundproofing Panel

How We Chose the Best Soundproofing Panels

Noise can be managed in different ways. In living spaces and offices, absorbing as much sound as possible is the goal. In home theaters, recording studios, and auditoriums, the goal is to shape and redirect the sound to create a particular atmosphere. To provide solutions for as many different people as possible, we chose top soundproofing panels from a variety of different categories.

Noise reduction coefficient (NRC) is a key feature that we discuss in more detail below, and it’s represented by a rating that indicates how efficient a panel is at absorbing sound. In addition, we considered aesthetics, ease of installation, and cost.

We also sought some expert input. Joe Cuschieri, executive director of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, says, “When dealing with noise or sound, there are two considerations: transmission and absorption. If the objective is to improve the sound quality in the room, then installation of sound absorption materials will reduce reverberation and improve the acoustics.” However, he goes on to say that if the problem is intrusion, meaning sound from other areas, “This type of noise improvement will be more complex, and a professional may be required to modify a wall partition.”

Our Top Picks

According to our research, the following products are the best soundproofing panels available right now. We have given each product a category so that potential buyers can easily identify those that are most suitable for their specific needs.

Best Overall

Two black TroyStudio Thick Acoustic Foam Panels on a white background.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.8
  • Size: 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 2 inches thick
  • Installation: Simple

Pros

  • Excellent general-purpose panel for sound absorption in offices, homes, and recording spaces
  • Dense foam and 3D shape cancel out echo and reverb while improving sound clarity
  • Can be installed with double-sided tape, spray adhesive, or small screws

Cons

  • No color choices, and the appearance may be too functional-looking for some living spaces

Choosing the overall best soundproofing panels was never going to be an easy task, but these from TroyStudio are the most versatile. While not the cheapest, they are still competitively priced. The 3D shape and dense foam structure will make a difference to the acoustic performance in many settings, whether in offices and homes or practice and recording spaces. At 2 inches thick, they provide good sound deadening and are able to combat echo and reverb.

The material is flame-retardant to the California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 standard (which addresses fire safety protection against smoldering and open flames), nontoxic, and easy to cut. Lightweight enough to be used on walls or ceilings, these panels can be installed using double-sided tape, spray adhesive, or small pins or screws.

Best Bang for the Buck

Twelve Izo Egg Crate Foam Acoustic Panels connected to make a large rectangular panel.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.4
  • Size: 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 1 inch thick
  • Installation: Simple

Pros

  • Budget-friendly soundproofing panels of particular interest to YouTubers and gamers
  • The curved egg-crate shape makes them effective at any angle, even on sloping ceilings
  • Meets California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 standard for flame-retardant materials

Cons

  • These panels offer a relatively modest NRC rating and are only available in gray

Izo’s egg-crate soundproofing panels may lack the absolute acoustic performance of some rivals, but their low price makes them very attractive. They can be a good solution for offices and home theaters where only modest sound suppression is required. YouTubers creating a small home studio and gamers trying to maximize their experience are customers who commonly purchase this product.

The product’s thickness is 1 inch at the peaks and half an inch in the valleys, so it will conform to unusual surfaces. The egg-crate shape delivers the same acoustic clarity even when fixed around corners or on sloping ceilings. Izo panels are easy to cut and can be installed using double-sided tape or adhesives.

Best Design

Six Bubos Decorative Art Acoustic Panels assembled to block sound and create an image of the view of earth from the moon.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.85 to 0.95
  • Size: 48 inches tall by 72 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick
  • Installation: Moderate

Pros

  • Offers a decorative focal point while also providing high soundproofing performance
  • Made from 60 percent recycled material and conforms to UL (Underwriters Laboratories) nontoxic standards
  • Includes self-adhesive nano tape that can typically be removed without damaging surfaces
  • Several different scenes to choose from

Cons

  • Comparatively expensive, and a few buyers expressed disappointed with the color intensity

While several manufacturers offer soundproofing panels in multiple colors, Bubos takes it to another level with a range of eye-catching graphics and panoramic scenes. These make attractive features on office or living room walls while also offering effective sound deadening.

They may only be 0.4 inch thick, but Bubos panels are high density to effectively absorb sound. The result is an impressive 0.85 to 0.95 NRC depending on the panels chosen. They are relatively simple to install using the supplied nano tape, which is designed to be removed without affecting the wall covering. However, some care is required to ensure proper panel alignment.

Best for Recordings

Two large stacks of Auralex Studiofoam Wedgies, each with two individual panels placed next to them.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.75
  • Size: 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 2 inches thick
  • Installation: Simple

Pros

  • Designed for recording studios but work equally well in home theaters
  • Also recommended for voice broadcasts; can be combined with bass traps and diffusers
  • Precision profile maximizes surface area, and high-quality foam does not degrade over time

Cons

  • Smallest pack size is 24 pieces, and the included self-adhesive tape could be stronger

Auralex Studiofoam Wedgies are widely regarded as one of the most cost-effective soundproofing panels for recording studios. While particularly useful for music, they are also suitable for voice broadcasts and can be used in streaming setups. Home theaters benefit from the excellent performance, too.

The high-quality, flame-retardant foam that Aurelex uses doesn’t degrade over time. Additionally, Wedgies are precision profiled for the best acoustic response and can be used with base traps, diffusers, and more for more accurate sound management. They are light and easy to install, though a few users thought the included mounting tape lacked strength. Adhesives are another option. Although good value for their purpose, a minimum pack size of 24 and the gray color means they may not be the best choice for offices and living spaces.

Best for Offices

Several Dekiru Soundproofing Insulation Panels stacked in front of many more panels connected to make a wall.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.92
  • Size: 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick
  • Installation: Simple

Pros

  • Available in a range of colors that can blend in with overall decor
  • High-performance sound suppression for offices, commercial spaces, and homes
  • Made from 100 percent polyester that is fire-retardant, nontoxic, and odorless

Cons

  • No adhesive is included

There are two approaches to fitting soundproofing panels in offices and other commercial spaces. One is to make them a decorative feature, and the other is to choose panels that blend in with the background so they go virtually unnoticed. These high-performance square panels from Dekiru are ideal for the latter, though with a little creativity, they can also be used decoratively.

The high-density polyester material offers an exceptional NRC of 0.92. Panels are fire-retardant, odorless, and nontoxic so they can be used in locations with children or animals. Being lightweight, these panels attach to surfaces using double-sided tape or adhesive, though none is provided.

Best Color Range

A stack of twelve Sonic Acoustics Hexagon Soundproofing Panels on a white background.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.92
  • Size: 12 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick
  • Installation: Simple

Pros

  • Huge range of colors
  • Flat or 3D hexagons with high sound absorption rate are flame-retardant and fade-resistant
  • Can easily be cut to shape without affecting the acoustic performance

Cons

  • No adhesive provided, and a few users have found that dimensions vary slightly between packs

Sonic Acoustics uses high-density polyester to create hexagonal soundproofing panels with excellent noise reduction. There are dozens of colors to choose from, so it’s hard to imagine a space where they couldn’t be used. The low-profile style works well where something subtle is demanded, while the 3D panels offer more eye-catching appeal.

These soundproofing panels are flame-retardant, nontoxic, and fade-resistant. They are easy to cut to shape (which won’t impact performance) and can be installed using tape, adhesive, or “liquid nails” on coarse surfaces such as concrete or block walls. Surprisingly, these panels are also affordably priced.

Best Large Panel

A large white ATS Acoustics Soundproofing Panel on a white background.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • NRC: 0.95
  • Size: 48 inches tall by 24 inches wide by 2 inches thick
  • Installation: Moderate

Pros

  • Furniture-quality panels with strong wooden frames handcrafted in the USA
  • Covered in 100 percent jute fabric with sound-absorbing Roxul AFB mineral wool core
  • Available in several colors, and will accept paint just like an artist’s canvas

Cons

  • These panels are relatively expensive and are not fire-retardant

The ATS Acoustics soundproofing panels are a little different from most, and not just because of their large size of 48 inches tall by 24 inches wide by 2 inches thick. This is an exceptionally high-quality product handcrafted in the USA. Each panel consists of a wooden frame that is filled with acoustic Roxul AFB mineral wool and then covered in 100 percent jute. Available in four standard colors but limitlessly customizable, these panels have a surface similar to an artist’s canvas so it can be painted. This creates the possibility of having soundproofing panels that are also unique works of art.

Several retailers rate NRC as a perfect 1.0, though ATS Acoustics itself gives the figure as 0.95. That’s still among the very best available. Each panel weighs 12 pounds. A comprehensive installation kit for drywall, concrete, or wood walls is included, but installation requires a little more work than simply applying adhesive.

What to Consider When Choosing Soundproofing Panels

It’s important to understand that soundproofing panels don’t stop sound coming in from outdoors. They should perhaps be called sound-absorbing or sound-reducing panels. Some muffle sound within a space, others reshape and redirect sound so it is canceled out. The following section explains the key issues.

Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)

NRC is a rating given to indicate how efficient a panel is at absorbing sound. The lowest is zero, the highest is 1. It is usually expressed as a decimal—0.5, for example—but occasionally as a percentage.

The closer the NRC rating is to 1 the better. Anything less than 0.25 will be fairly ineffective. Good budget-friendly panels are expected to have a rating of around 0.4. Technically NRC varies with frequency, and total noise reduction is impossible. The very best soundproofing panels can reach 0.95. Some retailers may quote 1 (perfect), but most reputable manufacturers do not.

The sound absorption coefficient (SAC) is another rating scale that measures lower frequencies than NRC. These may be more important to musicians and audio professionals. However, figures are hard to find and are probably only relevant to those creating high-end recording studios.

Material

Similar materials are used in most soundproofing panels, but construction varies. Some panels consist solely of acoustic foam, which is fairly easy to cut to shape and glue in place. However, while this can be relatively easy to fit, and very effective when done properly, it can also look untidy.

More aesthetically pleasing soundproof panels often have a wooden frame, acoustic foam or mineral wool infill, and a fabric cover.

It can be tempting to DIY panels from carpet, egg boxes, etc. However, while these can help reduce high-frequency noise, they are not effective against the lower frequencies that can be the most disturbing.

Size and Thickness

Soundproofing panels come in a wide variety of sizes. Squares and rectangles are commonly available in sizes ranging from 12 inches square to 24 inches by 48 inches (which can be mounted vertically or horizontally). Hexagonal models, often 12 inches by 14 inches, are also popular. As previously mentioned, acoustic foam can be cut to more or less any shape required, though this might impact the performance of some.

In terms of thickness, while a thicker panel might often mean higher performance, it shouldn’t be taken for granted. Always check the NRC.

Surface Pattern

Solid surfaces such as doors, walls, and windows create echo because sound bounces off them. Having a soft or textured surface can help absorb and redirect those sound waves. Wood-framed soundproofing panels usually have a relatively smooth fabric surface, though materials like jute might be used to give a slightly coarser texture. They may appear to be solid but they are not, and thus can absorb sound.

The other approach is a surface that is patterned with 3D triangles or pyramids, as found in acoustic foam panels. These channel or redirect sound waves so they cancel each other out. In professional installations, these can be tuned to produce specific results, hence why acoustic foam is usually the choice for recording studios.

Placement and Installation

In homes and offices, the placement of soundproofing panels can be somewhat arbitrary, and indeed choices like the Bubos art panels are designed to be installed as you would a painting or picture. Manufacturers may offer additional installation advice.

In more sensitive situations such as home theaters or sound studios, a period of experimentation is recommended where practical to assess which placement produces the desired results.

There are a number of options in terms of physical installation. Some of these panels can be hung just like a picture, while others are self-adhesive, and some can be glued.

FAQs

The information compiled above is intended to help in your selection and installation of the best soundproofing panels for your particular situation. Some additional general questions about these products and their uses are answered below.

Q. How effective are soundproof panels?

Soundproof panels can be tremendously effective, absorbing or redirecting different types of sound for different purposes. The key factor is choosing the right type of soundproof panel, and the article above offers appropriate guidance. Another option for soundproofing walls is to use mass-loaded vinyl (MLV).

Q. Does soundproofing reduce echo?

Soundproofing certainly can reduce echo. Something as simple as floor rugs can reduce echo in the home, but of course soundproofing panels are the most effective method.

Q. How many panels are needed to soundproof a room?

We surveyed a number of experts and got varying responses. Coverage of between 15 percent and 40 percent was suggested depending on the amount of sound absorption required. However, studios and home cinemas might benefit from up to 60 percent coverage.

Q. Are there any maintenance requirements for soundproof panels?

Most soundproof panels require little or no maintenance; the manufacturer should provide guidance. It depends on the material, but the only maintenance required is usually limited to dusting or vacuuming from time to time.

What to Consider When Choosing a Tool Vest

The number and type of pockets and holders as well as the comfort and fit are critical when shopping for a tool vest. We also sought advice on what to look for in the best tool vests from Adam Donnelly, owner of the Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, Handyman Connection location, which provides handyman services to consumers.

Pockets and Holders

Tool vests come equipped with various means of holding tools and supplies, including elastic straps, pouches, holsters, clips, and pockets. They can carry a broad range of tools, including screwdrivers, cordless drills, tape measures, and hammers. Many tool vests also have large pockets that can hold fasteners, such as nails and screws, along with smaller pockets for pencils. Pockets for smartphones are also a common feature.

While the amount of storage that a tool vest offers can vary significantly, most have between 15 and 20 holders. The pockets and holders on some tool vests are fixed, but many tool vests are modular, allowing the user to add and remove various holders to suit their needs and preferences.

Donnelly advises not to simply choose a tool vest with the most pockets and holders. “Look for something that has an organizational system, not just random pockets,” he says. “The pockets should be placed in a way that you can easily get the tool or material out and be held safely when in the vest.”

Fabric and Care

Most tool vests are made of some type of nylon mesh or a mix of nylon mesh and leather. That’s because these two materials are very durable and resist ripping and tearing better than other materials. Donnelly says along with materials, it’s also important to pay attention to construction quality: “Think reinforced stitching around the wear-and-tear areas and sturdy zippers and clasps.”

The vest material should also breathe well, so you don’t end up sweaty. “You will be working, so getting something with breathable fabric—mesh or wicking fabric-–will help keep you cool while working,” he says.

Tool vests are not indestructible and must be handled with care when cleaning. Donnelly suggests getting a model you can throw in the washing machine. If the vest isn’t washing machine–safe, you’ll need to spot-clean it using a damp cloth and, when necessary, mild detergent.

Comfort and Fit

Tool vests are designed to hold a fair amount of weight and are often worn throughout an 8-hour workday, so comfort is paramount. Most tool vests have straps on the sides, against the back, and at the shoulders to make adjustments that ensure a good fit, so the weight of the tools is evenly distributed across the wearer’s back. These adjusters are especially important with tool vests that are one-size-fits-all.

“You need a snug fit when the vest is weighed down so it doesn’t slip and slide,” Donnelly says. “Don’t get it too small thinking it will stay up because it will be too restrictive and be uncomfortable to wear.” Padded shoulders are also a plus.

FAQs

Below, find out how long you can expect your tool vest to last and why tool vests may be a better option than a tool belt.

Q. How long do tool vests last?

How long a tool vest lasts depends on the material and build quality. Higher-end tool vests designed for professionals and made from high-quality mesh nylon and leather can last a lifetime if cared for properly. Cheaper tool vests may only last 5 or so years before the stitching in the seams starts breaking down or holes begin to form in the pouches.

Q. Are tool vests better than tool belts?

Whether tool vests are better than tool belts comes down to personal preference and what you find more comfortable. Tool belts distribute weight across the wearer’s hips, whereas a tool vest distributes the weight through the back and shoulders. Tool vests often allow for more storage since they can have pockets on the abdomen, but they can also be hotter.

Q. Do tool vests come in different sizes?

Whether a tool vest comes in different sizes varies depending on the vest. While some tool vests come in sizes ranging from small to extra large, many tool vests are one-size-fits-all and have straps that allow the user to tailor the vest to meet their body size.

Spring is finally here, which means it’s that time of year again when you pull out all of your cleaning tools and products and start deep cleaning your entire space. Before you reach for cleaning supplies that contain unpronounceable chemicals, consider this: Did you know you can achieve a sparkling clean home using natural cleaning ingredients? In fact, research shows that using natural products to clean the home may reduce the risk of respiratory health issues associated with conventional products. What’s more, they’re better for the environment. Before you grab a bottle of disinfectant, browse through the list below for some of our favorite ways to spring clean your home naturally.

1. Wash Windows

Save yourself the time and expense of trying every “streak-free” window cleaner on the market. Instead, mix one part vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle. After spraying the windows, wipe them off using black-and-white newspaper or a lint-free towel.

2. Spruce Up Stainless Steel

Natural cleaners are best for stainless steel because caustic bleaches and cleansers can damage the finish. Treat tough stains with a baking soda-and-water paste. Keep your surfaces streak-free by polishing them with olive oil.

3. Polish Metal Fixtures

Person using a blue microfiber towel to clean a bathroom fixture.

Make metal shine by treating it with a paste of salt and lemon juice. Apply the paste to copper, brass, or steel with an old toothbrush, and you’ll remove tarnish and rust in no time. It also works on food-stained plastic dishes!

4. Scrub the Oven

Give an antique dresser a makeover with a couple of cooking staples: two parts olive oil and one part lemon on a clean microfiber cloth will make it gleam.

6. Polish the Silver

Can’t stomach silver polish’s stinky fumes? The natural solution for cleaning silver is super simple: Make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water, rub the paste onto the silver with a microfiber cloth, then rinse and dry the item.

7. Clean Exterior Concrete

Outdoor concrete can often be cleaned with nothing more than water and a pressure washer. To remove stubborn concrete stains, try spraying a bit of hydrogen peroxide on the stain. Let it sit for 10 minutes or so before spraying it away with the pressure washer.

8. Wash Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, but snow, rain, and wind can soil its surface. To keep your siding free of grime and dirt, wash it with a solution of 70 percent water and 30 percent vinegar, then rinse it clean.

9. Grow a Fly Repellent

A few types of basil growing in a window box planter.

Basil is a natural fly repellant. Grow it in pots, window planters, and near doorways to keep flies away in the summer months.

10. Freshen the Kitchen Drain

Run lemon rinds through the garbage disposal to make your sink’s drain less stinky. Lemons can also have a bleaching effect on stained sinks. Add a pinch of salt to a sliced lemon and rub the affected area, then rinse the sink with warm water.

11. Clean the Carpets

Baking soda is a super effective—and cheap—way to clean and deodorize carpets. (Folks with pets should always keep it on hand!) To freshen your floors, sprinkle some soda on your carpets and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before vacuuming. You can also use cornstarch, which soaks up oils on the carpet, the same way.

12. Sanitize the Grout

Cleaning grout isn’t a cakewalk, but using baking soda is a trusted way to keep grout stain-free. Make a paste of baking soda and water, and spread it between tiles and around your tub. Spray vinegar on the paste to create a foaming natural cleanser, then scrub and rinse the area.

13.Get Rid of Bathtub Grime

Banish hard water stains from the bathtub by laying vinegar-soaked paper towels over the stains. Leave the paper towels be for up to 2 hours. Scrub the stains with a baking soda paste, spray the paste with a vinegar-and-water solution, and rinse.

14.Wipe Away Water Rings

If your guests forget to use a coaster, remove water rings they leave behind with a mix of salt and olive oil. Rub the mixture gently onto the table with a soft cloth, and wipe it clean.

15. Unclog a Drain

If you keep just one thing in your natural cleanser arsenal, it should probably be vinegar. To fix a clogged drain, try pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda, followed by 1 cup of vinegar. The chemical reaction between the two will cause a cleansing foam. Once the fizzing stops, flush the drain with hot water. Wait 5 minutes and flush the drain again with cold water.

16. Scrub Burnt Food on Pots and Pans

Photo: istockphoto.com

Crispy cheese, burnt rice, stuck-on oatmeal—no wonder some folks hate washing dishes! Loosen caked-on food first by sprinkling baking soda and spraying it with vinegar, then scrubbing the mess with steel wool or a nylon scrubber.

17. Freshen Wood Furniture

Spoonful of coconut oil from jar on wooden table.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Foodies love coconut oil for its health benefits, but it’s handy around the house as well. Polish wood furniture with coconut oil and a microfiber cloth, rubbing with the grain of the wood. Allow the oil time to soak in and dry before putting anything back on its surface.

18. Create an All-Purpose Cleanser

Glass of vinegar and half of a lemon with cleaning materials.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Lemon and vinegar are two of the best natural cleansers, so why not combine the two? It’s easy to make a DIY all-purpose cleanser by soaking lemon peels in white vinegar for 2 weeks. Once you strain out the peels, this cleanser can tackle almost any surface (don’t use it on quartz countertops, though). Orange and grapefruit peels do the trick, too.

19. Shine Vinyl Floors

It can be tedious work, but cleaning window blinds still has to be done. Spraying a solution that’s 30 percent vinegar and 70 percent water on them can help loosen dust and grime. Use a microfiber cloth or a special blind-cleaning wand to wipe them down afterward.

21. Clean the Microwave

Person putting bowl with lemon in microwave.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Blast away baked-on splatters in the microwave by boiling 2 cups of water and the juice and peels of two lemons in a microwave-safe bowl. Keep the microwave door closed for 10 minutes afterward to allow the steam to cut through the grease. Wipe away the loosened grime with a paper towel or sponge.

22. Deep Clean the Dishwasher

Photo: istockphoto.com

If your dishwasher smells and hasn’t been cleaned in a while, just how clean do you think your dishes are really getting? Eliminate dishwasher odors and gunk by placing a bowl of distilled white vinegar on the top rack of the appliance while it’s empty, and running it through a wash cycle. When the cycle ends, leave the door open to let it dry completely.

23. Dust Plants

Person wiping dust of plant leaves with towel.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Houseplant leaves collect a tremendous amount of dust. This isn’t just bad for your allergies, it also prevents the plant from receiving the sunlight it needs. To remove the dust and add some shine, polish the leaves with a little bit of mayonnaise.

24. Whiten White Laundry

Person putting white bed sheets in dryer.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Do you have a smelly garbage can? Scrub it down with a natural all-purpose cleaner (like the citrus-and-vinegar spray mentioned above) and wipe it dry. Once the can is completely dry, sprinkle baking soda into the bottom; the powder will neutralize odors.

26. Scrub the Stove

Use half a lemon and a bit of baking soda to clean messy stove burners. Rub the lemon slice over the stovetop, sprinkle baking soda on top, and then gently scrub the baked-on food away with a sponge or nylon scrubber.

27. Tackle the Toilet

You don’t need strong chemicals to clean the toilet—a DIY toilet bowl cleaner that contains a mix of baking soda and essential oils will do the trick nicely. Drop a spoonful of the mixture into the toilet bowl and sprinkle some under the rim. Next, pour 2 cups of distilled vinegar over the baking soda mixture. Let the concoction fizz, and then scrub stains away with a toilet brush. Allow the cleaner to sit in the bowl for another 15 minutes, and then flush.

28. Spray Away Ants

Keep ants out of the kitchen—and the rest of your house—without chemicals: All you have to do is mix 10 drops of tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture indoors and out to prevent ants from coming inside.

29. Tidy Up the Garden Tools

Hands cleaning and assembling garden scissors.

Photo: istockphoto.com

If you didn’t clean your garden tools before putting them away last fall, you’ll want to get them spic and span for the start of the new growing season. Use olive oil and a clean cloth to remove caked-on dirt and condition the wood handles.

The Best Heat Pump Water Heater installed in a tidy utility room with white walls.

Photo: istock.com

Heat pump water heaters are widely recognized as the most efficient way to produce hot water for the home. They use less energy than traditional water heaters—and that means significantly lower utility bills. It also means fewer greenhouse gases, so they’re better for the planet.

So why don’t we all have one? In part, it could be that consumers don’t have enough information and are unsure of how to choose the right model. A higher initial cost might also be a factor. This guide explains how heat pump water heaters work—and how they save money—and explores all the key features. It also reveals our picks for the best heat pump water heaters currently available today.

  1. BEST OVERALL: Rheem Performance Platinum Hybrid Water Heater
  2. BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK: A.O. Smith Hybrid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater
  3. UPGRADE PICK: Stiebel Eltron Accelera 220 E Heat Pump Water Heater
  4. BEST SMART: Rheem Performance Platinum Smart Water Heater

Before You Buy a Heat Pump Water Heater

Despite their efficiency and economy, heat pump water heaters may not be for everyone. While significant savings occur over time, a heat pump water heater cost will initially be more than most alternatives. Additionally, some models don’t heat water quite as quickly as traditional gas or electric models. Busy families will want to look carefully at both tank size and first hour rating, which is the estimate of how many gallons of hot water a water heater can provide in an hour when starting with a tank full of hot water.

Some heat pump water heaters also need ample air space from which to draw heat. Keith Wortsmith, president of Dash Heating, Cooling & Plumbing in Hot Springs, Arkansas, confirms this: “Heat pump water heaters require sufficient airflow around them to function efficiently. This often means they can’t be installed in tight spaces like a small closet.” However, a hybrid heat pump water heater can be an effective solution. Wortsmith agrees, noting, “This type of heat pump water heater has a great advantage. It can switch to a traditional electric water heater when required.” This flexibility can overcome the issues of cold environments and restricted spaces.

Tankless water heaters are an economical alternative, so we looked into whether a tankless heat pump water heater had been developed. Unfortunately, we only located one option, and it’s currently only available for commercial installation.

How We Chose the Best Heat Pump Water Heaters

A handful of brands dominate this market, which meant we could conduct detailed research on just about every model currently available: nearly two dozen models in total.

There are three distinct types of heat pump water heaters, so it was important that we found leading examples of each type for this guide. Key factors in deciding which models rose to the top were capacity (including if multiple sizes were available to suit different needs), heating efficiency, energy savings, and cost. We also analyzed customer feedback from several retail sources so we could check real-world reliability and durability.

Our Top Picks

The following selections offer a variety of different solutions in specific categories. Read on to learn more about our top picks for the best heat pump water heaters on the market today.

Photo: homedepot.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 67 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.88
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 40, 65, 80

Pros

  • Hybrid model with 5 operating modes, including rapid heating for high-demand periods
  • Estimated energy savings of up to $3,150 over 10 years, plus potential rebates
  • Wi-Fi capability and EcoNet app allow extensive monitoring and control from anywhere

Cons

  • Although most appear reliable, some customers have noted heat pump issues

One criticism of heat pump water heaters is that they can be slow. The Rheem Performance Platinum water heater negates this concern with a hybrid setup that can operate in either heat pump mode for maximum energy savings or standard electric mode that produces hot water rapidly. Thanks to Wi-Fi integration and the EcoNet app, users can adjust these settings from anywhere.

It’s even possible to see how much hot water is in the tank via the app.

The important first hour rating (FHR) is a competitive 67 gallons. According to Rheem, this model’s uniform energy factor (UEF) of 3.88 means potential energy savings of 75 percent compared to standard electric water heaters. That percentage translates to a savings of up to $315 per year.

Best Bang For The Buck

The A.O. Smith Hybrid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater on white background.
Photo: lowes.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 65 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.8
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 66, 80

Pros

  • Offers a good balance between competitive performance and value for money
  • Hybrid technology allows easy switching between maximum economy or fast heating
  • Among the quietest water heaters on the market at just 45 decibels

Cons

  • Problems aren’t common, but some owners experienced difficulties with warranty claims

A.O. Smith’s hybrid heat pump water heater is another model that uses hybrid technology to produce hot water very quickly to satisfy high demand but run economically the rest of the time. According to the manufacturer, this technology can result in potential energy savings of 76 percent compared to standard electric models—up to $385 per year.

This model’s specifications are similar to many competitors with an FHR of 65 gallons and a UEF of 3.8. The iCOMM Smart Connectivity app allows monitoring and control from a smartphone, and users can also receive an alert if a leak is detected. The Leak Shield system will then automatically shut off the water supply until the leak is fixed. The pricing of the A.O. Smith Signature is a bit higher than our best overall pick, but all things considered, we think it offers excellent value for money.

Upgrade Pick

The Stiebel Eltron Accelera 220 E Heat Pump Water Heater on a white background.
Photo: stiebeleltronamericas.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 50.3 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.09
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 80

Pros

  • German-engineered construction offers superior reliability
  • Rated to save up to 80 percent on hot water costs
  • Booster element provides additional hot water at times of peak demand
  • Super-insulated tank promises to keep water hot over 2-week vacations for just $4

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi connectivity or smartphone app
  • Louder than some competitors at 60 decibels

Stiebel Eltron is keen to point out that its Accelera 220 E model is not a hybrid product but a full heat pump water heater. This manufacturer’s focus has been on energy savings, and it claims that this model reduces hot water bills by as much as 80 percent. Super insulation keeps water hot for longer periods, while redesigned air intake and exhaust allow for installation in compact spaces.

An FHR of 50.3 gallons reflects the fact that this is a pure heat pump model, leaving no doubt they are a little slower. However, there is a booster option for periods of high demand. The UEF is 3.09. A digital display on the unit shows hot water volume, but the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity and a smartphone app for remote monitoring are definite downsides to this model.

Best Smart

The Rheem Performance Platinum Smart Water Heater on a white background.
Photo: homedepot.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 67 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.88
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 40, 65, 80

Pros

  • EcoNet app offers multiple control functions and monitoring home or away
  • LeakSense system shuts off water supply with an audible alarm and notification via smartphone app

Cons

  • Typically costs more than the Rheem Performance Platinum hybrid model, with some customers noting the advantages are minimal

The Rheem Performance Platinum smart water heater is based on our top pick—the Rheem Performance Platinum hybrid model—and shares impressive figures of an FHR of 67 gallons and a UEF of 3.88. This model also offers a multifunction screen on the unit itself and an EcoNet smartphone app that offers control over mode selection.

The main benefit of this Rheem water heater is the LeakSense leak detection system that will automatically shut off the water supply if a leak is detected and limit water loss to a maximum of 20 ounces. Additionally, an audible alarm will sound, and the unit sends a notification to the user’s smartphone app. So, if the user is away, they don’t need to rush home to address the leak.

Most Versatile

The Bradford White Aerotherm Heat Pump Water Heater on a white background.
Photo: amazon.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 65 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.44
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 65, 80

Pros

  • Offers a level of personalization that no other heat pump water heater we researched could match
  • Adjustable mode settings can provide even greater energy savings than government UEF figures
  • 2-inch non-CFC foam insulation minimizes heat loss

Cons

  • No automatic leak shutoff feature
  • Significantly more expensive than competitor models

The Bradford White Aerotherm heat pump water heater is another hybrid model, and like many competitors, it offers multiple operating modes. However, the level of control available to the user on this water heater is exceptional. Whereas many rivals switch to the electric mode for rapid water heating, this model’s standard mode combines both heating systems, making it both fast and economical. The published UEF of 3.44 is calculated in standard mode, so even greater savings are possible when using the unit as a heat pump only.

Full electric mode is available for very cold days. Vacation mode will allow the water temperature to drop but automatically boost it to the normal user-defined level the day before return, so there’s no wait for hot water. The Bradford White Connect app allows the user to create schedules and adjust temperatures remotely.

Best For Cooler Regions

The Eco2 Systems Sanco2 Heat Pump Water Heater on a white background.
Photo: eco2waterheater.com

Product Specs

  • First hour rating: 69 gallons
  • Uniform energy factor: 3.11
  • Other sizes (in gallons): 83, 119

Pros

  • Will produce hot water when air temperatures are as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Outdoor unit can be as far as 50 feet from indoor tank, allowing for flexible installation
  • Low power consumption makes it ideal for combining with solar panels

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi connectivity
  • High-priced option for basic functionality

The Sanco2 heat pump water heater is a two-part system that uses technology similar to split air conditioning units. The heat pump stays outdoors, with a hot water tank inside instead of a fan. These systems are particularly ideal for cooler climates, as they continue to produce hot water even when the outside temperature is as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit. They can be fast as well, with this 43-gallon model delivering an impressive FHR of 69 gallons.

The outdoor unit runs at a near-silent 37 decibels and can be placed up to 50 feet from the indoor tank. Since the tank’s job is to simply contain hot water, it is suitable for installation in restricted spaces. However, while the Sanco2 heat pump water heater is very efficient, its functionality is fairly basic with no modes or smartphone app.

What to Consider When Choosing a Heat Pump Water Heater

In a nutshell, a heat pump hot water heater draws in air, extracts the latent heat from it, and uses that air to provide hot water. In fact, these units can extract a surprising amount of warmth even when it feels chilly outdoors. Since heat pump water heaters don’t directly use electricity or gas to heat the water, they use much less energy than even the best traditional water heaters. Keep reading to learn about the important factors to consider when choosing a heat pump water heater, such as size, performance, installation options, and noise level.

Size and First Hour Rating

The overall capacity of a water heater in gallons is one of the most important considerations in deciding its suitability for any given home and family. Manufacturers usually provide guidance, but it is based on averages. No two situations are alike, so users will want to consider their water usage.

A water heater’s FHR is how much hot water it can provide in an hour when starting with a tank full of hot water. This is particularly important at peak usage times when users don’t have time to wait. Keep in mind that the size of the tank is not necessarily an accurate predictor of FHR. For instance, several models we researched had an FHR higher than the actual tank capacity. In practical terms, this means the tank could be completely emptied and refilled in under an hour. This information should appear on the EnergyGuide label required by U.S. law for all water heaters.

Energy Efficiency

Heat pump water heaters can be significantly more energy efficient than traditional models, and thanks to U.S. government requirements, it’s possible to determine the actual efficiency of each model. Since 2017, all water heaters sold in the United States must indicate a UEF.

Several criteria, including actual capacity, energy consumption, and FHR, are used to calculate overall energy efficiency, and the higher the number, the better. Our research compared several traditional and heat pump water heaters: The traditional models were all lower than 1.0, whereas the heat pump water heaters were all higher than 3.0.

Installation and Noise

Pure heat pump water heaters need space around them from which to draw air, and this requirement impacts where users can install them. This may not be a problem for those looking for a commercial heat pump water heater, but many of these models aren’t recommended for closets, for example. The flip side is that if they can be installed in an open space near a furnace where there is a plentiful supply of warm air, they will use even less energy than normal. Heating and cooling expert Wortsmith agrees: “Heat pump water heaters work more efficiently in humid areas. The air contains more heat energy due to the presence of moisture. Heat pumps can extract this heat more easily and efficiently, leading to better performance.”

Split heat pump water heaters have indoor and outdoor units, so this type of installation is different, although there’s much greater flexibility when positioning the indoor unit. Hybrid heat pump water heaters can switch between heat pump and traditional operation. While this does make installation easier, the efficiency drops in traditional mode.

Heat pump water heater noise is typically minimal. They are usually very quiet—under 50 decibels—so they can often be installed near living rooms and bedrooms without disruption.

The Advantages of Owning a Heat Pump Water Heater

Although heat pump water heaters may seem like a fairly recent invention, the idea of heat exchange systems has been around for more than 100 years: Developing a heat pump for water heater use dates back to the 1930s. Potential buyers can be confident they are investing in well-proven technology. Here are the main advantages of owning a heat pump water heater:

  • They can use free heat from the surrounding air or a nearby furnace, potentially saving hundreds of dollars per year.
  • Reduced energy consumption means fewer greenhouse gases, so they are more environmentally friendly.
  • Noise levels are low, so they can be installed near living rooms and bedrooms without disturbance.
  • They are reliable and can last up to 25 percent longer than traditional water heaters when properly maintained.
  • Tax incentives or rebates may be available depending on the geographic area.

FAQs

This guide contains a lot of useful information, much of it specific to particular models or buyer options. During our research, we found a few questions of a more general nature that crop up regularly. Read on to find the answers to these frequently asked questions.

Q. How does a heat pump water heater work?

A heat pump water heater works by extracting warmth from the outside air and using it to warm the water. According to Energy.gov, it operates much like a refrigerator but in reverse.

Q. Do heat pump water heaters work in cold climates?

Heat pump water heaters do work in cold climates, but some models are better than others. Pure heat pump water heaters function at their best when the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. They will work below this temperature, but not as efficiently. Hybrid models can switch to electric operation if it gets too cold. Split heat pump water heaters that have an outdoor compressor continue to work at temperatures as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q. What are the disadvantages of a heat pump water heater?

The main disadvantage of a heat pump water heater is often seen as the initial cost. However, according to government figures, models that meet Energy Star certification (and almost all do) offer considerable savings over time.

Another potential disadvantage is that some models require reasonable air space to operate most efficiently, so they aren’t always recommended for small homes. Additionally, they may heat water more slowly than some traditional electric water heaters.
