When it comes to re-painting, everyone’s least favorite part of the job is prepping the surface… but it’s also the most important. Using the right tools can make it a lot easier.

It’s a good idea to gather a collection of scrapers with different blade shapes and sizes.  For large areas that need heavy-duty scraping, you can get a scraper blade attachment for your reciprocating saw.  For finely carved woodwork, a collection of old dental tools comes in really handy.

To avoid damaging the wood as you scrape, take your time and change blades often.  For really scaly areas, some painters apply an exterior spackle to even out the surface before priming.

Remember, on any job involving a home built before 1978, always consult a lead-safe certified professional and check the environmental protection agency’s website, www.epa.gov  to find out how to get the job done safely.
