After years of Thanksgiving dinners, superbowls and midnight snacks, it’s probably served you well, but that old fridge in your garage is adding more to your electric bill than it’s worth. Did you know that refrigerators hog more power than almost anything else in your house?
Listen to BOB VILA ON THE NEW FRIDGE, or read text below:
A new fridge is a big purchase, and there will be a small fee to dispose of the old one, but some electrical utilities are actually giving rebates to customers who replace their old clunkers with new, energy-efficient models. The Department of Energy’s website, energy.gov, has a database of incentives by state so you can check what’s available where you are.
Hey, even without the rebate, buying an energy star model makes sense. A mid-size fridge more than 10 years old can cost $100 a year to run. Energy-star models cut that in half.
