Today was another day of discovery at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, and while I covered a lot of ground and saw a full array of bath and kitchen faucets, tubs, showers and toilets, I also found some amazing surfacing materials—some of them faux, some of them real, some of them amazingly innovative, and some of them just too beautiful to imagine.
Lustrolite is a multi-layer acrylic sheet product that looks just like traditional glass sheets but weighs 3/4 less. With a variety of applications, including shower walls and kitchen backsplashes, the product comes in seven colors (including Blue Atoll, shown above) and is easy to install, since it can be cut and drilled with normal woodworking tools. It will not scratch, crack, warp, stain or discolor from normal residential use.
Wilsonart expanded their HD High Definition Laminate collection with 14 new natural stone looks, from Roman limestone to Bengal slate. These new products continue to reflect the advances made in laminates over the years; they mimic not just the pattern, but even the subtle tones and color gradations found in natural stone. A variety of counter edge options and flush-mount sinks add to the appeal.
Advanced Technology offers a clever and inexpensive panel wall system for standard tubs and showers. The MirroFlex product—a thermoplastic panel system that incorporates a FushionTech printing on a proprietary coating—comes packaged with two tub side panels, one back panel and finishing trim. Certainly one for the kids, this panel product is impact-, scratch- and fire-resistant, and it can be easily cut to size with a scissors.
On the truly luxe side, Ann Sacks introduced exotic wall coverings, from petrified wood and travertine marble to an amazing dyed black Shagreen (real sharkskin), shown above. Available in four different sized tiles for a variety of different wall configurations, the grout lines are actually water buffalo bone. Just what you would expect from one of the most innovative tile companies in the industry.
