Opening Day at the Builders’ Show
What’s new at this year’s International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando, FL? Bob Vila for one. After a five year absence Bob returned to the show to see what new products and innovations are influencing building today, and to kick off the first of the IBS Live events scheduled for the show. He spoke to an engaged audience about current trends in housing and the need to build homes that are smaller, smarter, greener and healthier.
Here is a small sample of some of the products that caught our eye today:
Formica, a company known mostly for its innovations in laminate counter tops, is showcasing a new solid surfacing material called eSeries. Each sheet of solid surfacing contains 15% recycled content—10% pre-consumer and 5% post-consumer waste—making it good looking and eco-friendly. There were some exciting new laminates, as well, like the 180fx Dolce Vita with its large-scale, veined granite-like pattern and custom edge treatments.
Kohler showcased the Numi toilet—a sleek, compact, modern, rectangular design that not only combines a toilet and a bidet in one, but offers the added benefits of integrated air dryer, deodorizer, heated seat, feet warmer, illuminated panels, music and a motion activated lid and seat. You will need to operate the toilet from an electronic panel, but with its price tag of $6,390 (MSRP), would you expect anything less? The toilet does offer a new dual flush technology that separates waste and still uses roughly 20% less water than the standard toilet.
Armstrong, known for its broad range of hardwood, vinyl, laminate and linoleum flooring products, introduces Luxe Plank—a product designed with the DIYer in mind. Self-adhesive strips make installation easy and fast. And in addition to its natural wood look, the benefits of easy maintenance and comfort underfoot make this vinyl newcomer highly appealing.
