Hello from Sundance
What was I doing at the Sundance Film Festival? Well, as you may have realized, I move around a fair amount.
We have a family foundation run by my wife — The Fledgling Fund — which supports out-reach campaigns for documentary films that have potential for social impact. Out of that we spun off Impact Partners, which is a group of about 20 folks who share an interest in the role that docs have in social change and awareness. One of our projects, which was at Sundance last year, Gasland , is now up for an Oscar for best documentary.
This year at Sundance we backed Hell and Back Again which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography Prize in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Directed by Danfung Dennis, it is told from the perspective of one Marine, from the beginning of his 2009 Afghanistan tour to his return and rehabilitation in the U.S.
My personal choices for the best that I saw are: Hell and Back Again (OK, I’m biased) and Senna, a bio-pic about the great Brazilian racecar driver, which also won awards. I also enjoyed My Idiot Brother which has the potential to become a new franchise.
