The jars provide no drainage for the plants, which means that the roots are highly susceptible to root rot. You would need to drill drainage holes in the bottom of the jars, but then you couldn't display the jars as shown in the picture. The size of the jar also limits the size plants you could reasonably grow. To make it work without drainage holes, you must limit water to only when the soil becomes very dry and transplant the herbs when they get bigger. I was pleased to take discarded jars that I found partially buried underground, clean them, and then find a unique way to use them in my garden (where the photo was taken). Whether you are using jars for canning garden goodies or finding uses for the jars that aren't great for canning anymore, there are so many possibilities! Wonderful!
