Some home have both the black PVC plumbing and the older galvanized plumbing. Eggshells grind up into small pieces. The little pieces catches on little nicks and rough areas of the galvanized piping and at the seams or connections of the PVC piping where it accumulates and catches other fibrous matter mostly from vegetables and over time will clog plumbing. In addition the opening where the garbage disposal drain connects to the drain line is only half as wide as the opening on the drain line due to design and to prevent back-flushing. Just a matter of time until it clogs.

no eggshells.. dont ask why just put in compost.. you do compost dont you? Lemon cleans everything but too much is not good either.. it is good to have a filter on top of drain.. just in case.. why are people so lazy.. the disposal is not a food processor.. coffee grounds go in the garden.. you do have one dont you?

I've been putting banana peels and potato peels into the garbage disposal for 14 years. With a banana peel you don't want to put in the stem but the rest is OK. I also do coffee grounds. A big no-no is artichocke leaves and edamame (soybean) pods. Those will jam up fast.

There are so many do's and don'ts that I believe it's easier to put ALL my garbage in the garbage can. Then I don't ever have to worry about preventing any future problems. The last place your garbage should be is in your plumming. What's wrong with water only? That's just my belief.

I still put the occasional eggshells in mine, but I had a friend with a daily egg habit and older pipes and he had to pull out pounds of accumulated egg shell ''dust'' out of his pipes. I can't tell you the exact mechanical reason (worse with septic systems because the bacteria can't break down the shells), but I learned a valuable lesson at his expense!
