I inquired about switching to natural gas. My supplier told me the nearest gas main is about 700 feet from my home, so running the service to my home will cost $75 per foot, plus charges for installing a new gas meter, etc. After $49,000 in installation charges, I'd be saving money compared to my current oil heat.

I converted my oil furnace to natural gas, very pleased! Gas Co. charged me $35.OO to run gas line application fee. My plumber / heating serviceman charged $1,400.00 retrofit oil unit to natural gas. He ran gas line from meter to boiler, replaced oil burner with a natural gas burner. I didn't need to replace furnace just the burner.

I have a heat pump system in my house. But I'm a HVAC self employed contractor. If you own gas in a lot of areas you could still have to have a storage tank. These tanks you rent from the gas supplier. You don't need to pay for a contract to get oil. There are several guys out there like me who will service and clean your furnaces. I tell all my customers to shop around for oil to get the best prices per gallon.

I use a gas furnace in my home. I think the most important thing is to really educate yourself and shop around before installing a gas or oil furnace. Again, there's also the challenge of thinking about your home heating appliance being a long-term investment. Cheers, Tammy http://www.lewisadvantage.ca
