We've got an electric tankless heater in our house and we really love it. The cost in the installation wasn't a factor as I am able to handle the installation by myself. If you have every aspect calibrated and set up accordingly, it delivers the results. We were able to use a couple of showers and dish washers simultaneously. It is deal for taking showers - nobody gets a cold shower. Click here to see the tankless heater that we are using.

I don't know about the US but in Canada Sears will install a tankless water heater for free, including plumbing and gas fitting. All you have to do is enter a lease of $35 per month - the cost of the unit is included in that.
Reliance (my old tank provider) asked for $75 to pick it up or said it could be brought back by us for no charge.

I've had an Aqua Star for 14 years and works like a charm. Now, after all this time, sometimes water doesn't heat very hot or takes a long time to get real hot. I have been totally on rain water, TDS is 7, so there is no scaling as the water is distilled by God. anyone know what could be going on?

I did a video on these Rinnai units, they pump out the hot water yes but watch out for the hard water issues www.joshthegasfitter.com http://youtu.be/aIDLdairWrY

To all the naysayers, I bought an older house with an oversized 80gal hot water heater/tank. I replaced it with a Rinnai hot water heater, and my savings on propane usage are sizeably measurable. Granted, it wasn't a big deal to retrofit since gas and water lines were readily available to the mounting site, but even so, you will use far less energy heating water when you need it, vs. heating water all the time whether you want to or not (as in a tank).
