I, too, am seduced by light! A bright room is just more inviting to me. You could add sheer curtains, which would allow the light to brighten the room, but provide enough of a barrier to place a chair, etc. in front of it.

We get the morning sun, which shines right in my eyes, so I understand what you mean about that. We need to get some different window treatments, so I can avoid that, if I want to sleep in.

Also, I love my big kitchen picture window, but it leaves a large wall unusable. That's also on the east wall, and it doesn't stay light & bright in there most of the day, so that's something to think about, too. There is no way I'd get rid of that window, because we love to sit at the table and watch the wildlife through it.

I learned that same lesson regarding skylights! Oh, how nice to have a sitting room with the sun streaming in . . . fading the furniture and walls, making it unbearably hot in the summer, and making sunglasses a necessity for reading a book! (Yes, I know there are skylights with built-in shades, but at that point, why bother?!)

I would always err for too many windows rather than too few windows. Today's window films provide UV protection, protect from heat loss and can provide safety. If at sometime you need more furniture placement flexibililty you can also put a window treatment over the window and then place furniture in front of it. Window treatments can provide blackout capabilities, so you never have to fear a window in a sleeping room. Besides the overall joy of light streaming into a room, in your future, your home with lots of natural light will be more attractive for sale than homes with dark, enclosed spaces.
