Interior Inspiration: The Ombré Trend
By Live The Life You Dream About | A Style Interiors Fashion New York Life Blog on Jun 05, 2013
Wave hello to LTLYDA contributor, Stacey Sheppard of The Design Sheppard. Stacey’s column on European Design appears here for us on first Wednesdays of the month and I’m happy to welcome her back for her fifth installment!
I’m back with a new dose of European design trends especially curated for you based on the design world over here on the other side of the pond! This installment features a trend that has become increasingly popular here in Europe over the past few seasons and has filtered down into interiors from the fashion industry.
Ombré, or flocking as it is sometimes called, is often seen in fashion in the form of dip dyed textiles or even hair styles. But when it comes to interiors, there are a number of ways that this stunning design technique can be utilised to maximum and dramatic effect, and numerous companies have been integrating the effect into their interior collections.
Back in March I attended Meet the Blogger in London and took part in a workshop hosted by leading paint company Dulux. It was a great event during which Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director, gave us a crash course in how to achieve the ombré paint effect in our own homes.
This look is easy to achieve and can be created using two or three colours that are carefully blended along a connecting line.
However, if your decorating skills are a little bit lacking, it is possible to get the look without having to resort to slapping paint on the walls. There is some very impressive wallpaper on the market that mimics the ombré paint effect. One of my favourites is by DIGITEX. This is definitely an easy and effective way to get the look at home.
For some people though, bringing this trend into your home in such a large scale way may be a little bit overwhelming. In this case, the way forward is to accessorize with ombré on a smaller scale using soft furnishings like rugs and cushions -- and there are some very attractive options to choose from. How Are You is a Swedish company that has recently released a new range of ombré cushions in subtle pastel colours.
And bluebellgray, a company I wrote about in my last post, produces an absolutely gorgeous ombré rug in teal, which is again a very subtle way of using this trend at home.
