We have an algae problem with a small patch on our roof in the shady area. It is my understanding that a 50/50 mixture of bleach/water applied with a garden sprayer will clean the algae from the shingles. Question is how long should I leave it on? Will it lighten the shingles?

chlorine/bleach should never be used on shingles. It will cause the shingles to dry out and crack. It is also very corrosive, and will cause problems if you get it on the siding or gutters. Plants don't like it either. A better way to combat algae growth is with a product called Roof Reviver. It will not hurt the shingles or cause other problems. Try www.Roofreviver.com.

Wait!!!!!

The bleach/water combination will curl the shingles. Bleach is not a roof's friend, nor the plants friend.

A better bet is to choose a purpose built roof cleaner.

Roof OX roof cleaner from www.CleanerTODAY.com has been designed to remove Roof Mold and Algae, and it really works!

They also have an even stronger contractor formula available.

Fair Prices, Great products.

I am a roof cleaning company in Tampa.

I have nothing to sell you.

I have been cleaning roofs in Tampa area for over 15 years.

Not ONE roof we have ever cleaned, has been harmed by bleach.

In fact, the people who make your shingles suggest bleach as the cleaning agent.

The problem is 50 percent bleach to water isn't going to clean anything.

Here is what to do, go get you some Clorox Outdoors Bleach from Home Depot or Lowes.

Spray it on the Algae without diluting it, and watch it disappear.

After 20 minutes, rinse it off.

Wet down, or cover all plants that can get dripped on, it is easy as that.

Bill, .........

Roof cleanning Tampa is telling you the truth,...I been roofing 30 years and never harmed a roof with bleach. Temperature variables and age combined,..cause curling,...weather prematurely from lack of venting or eventually from the wheathers` thermal abuse.

Bleach works only when it is dry, like in your dryer after washing laundry.

Shingles today incorporate copper into the matting/grainuals of the roof so that when moister arrives,...electrolices will prevent any growth from taking root or having a chance to grow.

DO NOT USE A PUSH BROOM OR POWER WASHER,....A GARDEN HOSE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH WATER PRESSURE AND WILL NOT SCRAPE OFF THE GRAINUALS

The worst danger is your health,...YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL UP THERE AND DON`T TAKE THAT RISK YOU FEEL YOU CAN !!
