I just moved into this really old farmhouse. There is a "mud" room/entryway. All the windows are the original and it looks like the glass is held into the windows by some kind of puddy/caulking. It is really hard and almost looks like wood. What is this stuff and how do I remove what is there and replace it. I am trying to keep everything as original as possible! Thanks for the help.

Glazing compound/putty has been around forever and older windows will have dried out so that it chips easily. Repair using the same but add some linseed oil to the old wood muntins first for the putty to work well. - Bob
