I'm in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico visiting a friend who will be having his whole house ducted a/c system to muni splits. On the old system the cold line to the evaperator is very well insulated with the hotter return line tied on the outside of it,exposed, as I have seen several times in the States and here.
I have looked at other mini split istallations of his neighbors of various manufactuers and noticed that both the cold & hot line are being run together in the same insulation. When I brought this to the attention of my friend's "installer" that was just out as to why the lines are insulated as one, his reply was these new unit's performance is not at all affected,as it had been in a whole house setup. I did pose to him what purpose did insulating the hot return serve and said, "nothing".

All walls and ceiling are concrete. The old duct work is used to route the new lines. Humidity and temperature is high for about 5 months and the rest of the year it's 76 to 84 degrees at about 50 to 65% in this area.

I do not see why this new way is ok.

Thank you

It sounds like a case of the contractor trying to just do a shoddy job and get away with it. Hopefully your friend will not be facing any problems with the works done, because I had a contractor install my radiator and he did a lousy job, which gave me nightmares until I engaged another person to resolve it.

With a little pleading in calling the a/c manufacturer in the US, a customer representative was good enough to send me a pdf file of the installation instructions for installers that are supposed to be followed, everywhere.
She even told me the page that clearly answered my question.A copy of the page was given to the installer's supervisor that admitted that, yes, they knew that both lines are to be insulated separatelyy but was done for simplicity by their workers, bliss of his boss and knew that someday a customer would call them on the carpet that it was wrong. Thus more of these systems in our complex have been installed since, properly.
