Hi there,
We are installing a steel roof (36" wide) sheets over one layer of shingles on our boathouse. It gets a lot of snow, we live in northern NY.
I want your opinion on how far apart we should place our 1*4 strapping? And if the strapping should be anchored through the particle board to the roof trusses, or if it can be just nailed through into the particle board? Is 16" centres for the strapping standard or can we go larger?

The metal manufacturing companies have charts for calculating frequency of purlins and of fasteners for any given load conditions. The yuard that sells you the material should be able to provide this.
I used to use a lot of this sort of steel panel in CO from Propanel. Another manufacturer is Metal Sales. The gauge of the metal ( 24. 26 or 29) is a variable that must be considered as is the type of fastener and the pitch of the roof. At a guess, I would place the strapping no further apart than 16" OC.
If your original sheathing is particle board, you have another problem. That has nearly no holding power whatsoever, so the fasteners used to strap should be screws - structural deck - not drywall type - run intop the rafters or trusses. particle board will disintegrate in a damp environment like a boat house, so I would be cautious even walking on it.
