It appears my fairly new house has no chimney flashing! Is there a way to apply flashing over the asphalt roofing that is still good? What is the procedure, if not? Thanks

i would reccomend still getting your flashing under your shingles but where you can not get into the mortar have some metal made for you that has a lip at the top to hold some tar or lexel to seal it up.this seems to work the best for me on reroofs that have bad metal on the chimney but no chimney flashing
NO!!
There is only one way to flash and counterflash Brick, stone or box siding chimnies reguardless of it being a side mounted, ridge mounted or field plane mounted chimney.
Stepflashing HAS to be installed and COUNTERFLASHING must be installed after.
You will never prevent the Headlap from leaking without steplashing and never prevent the stepflashing from leaking without counterflashing.
Before any flashing is applied you should wrap the entire chimney base with ice and water barrier. Then do the roofing and stepflashing. Then do counterflashing after stepflashing.
I do not reccomend this being done by anyone that has not done this as a proffession.
I am a 30 year roofer and could give you what you need to know.
Request with your reply and I will explain the entire process for you.
OddBall !!

It is important to note that the chimney itself and the interior of your home can be severly damaged without ever showing any signs of a leak. You need a trained eye !!
How did you fairly new house with no chimney flashing make it past the building inspector ? Someone is responsable for that !!
