I'm combining controls for my
gas heater (pretend fireplace),
one of which is a line voltage
fan rheostat and one of which is a low voltage solenoid
switch (the on/off switch for
gas). I'm using a combo fan/switch single gang device
from Leviton. The device
was rated for line voltage,
and probably intended for
all line voltage leads. So
I'm a little icky over using it this way. I don't have room for a double gang
box at this location. What's the advice?

You need to switch in front of the transformer for the gas valve not downstream.
