I have an open beam ceiling of 2x6 tongue-in-groove wood laid on an upper and lower beam. There is no insulation.
I want to replace the pitch & gravel covering with an insulating underlayment with shingles on top. 1.Where can I purchase an insulating sheet or board and 2. what type of shingle is recommended. The house is 45 years old and I live in Los Angeles.

Use the pink styrofoam in 2"thickness or two layers of 1 inch(r5) thickness..Cover this with 1/2" plywood and attach to roof rafters with screws..Then depending on pitch.....regular shingles on top of roofing felt or rolled roofing..
