We are getting our roof reshingled and all of the roofers have said that our gable vents need to be closed off which we agree with. We have a ridge vent and soffit vents. Our concern is that none of the roofers have done a complete inspection in our attic to make sure the soffit vents aren't blocked. They have peeked inside and told us we have baffles but that has been the extent of it. Shouldn't someone be inspecting to make sure these soffit vents aren't blocked before blocking off our gable vents? Is this the roofer's responsibility or do we need to hire another type of company to check this out? We have had 3 very reputable companies come out for estimates but we are concerned about ending up with a major ventilation problem if they close off the gable vents and the soffit vents are blocked. By the way, we have also had 3 different opinions as to whether we need to add more intake ventilation. If anyone can tell us what is code we would appreciate that. Thanks so much.

Will tell you what is code and should enforce it with the roofing contractor. If you don't pass inspection you will be in much worse shape but your roofing contractor should take care of this. See our tips for hiring a contractor.

As far as checking to see if they are blocked from the attic side. Any handyman can check that if you can't wedge your way all the way out to the soffit vents. you can do a simple check by being in the attic with no lights and shining a light into the vent from the outside.

This is not perfect but you may be able to tell if the vents are completely blocked.

Thank you so much for your reply. The contractor we have chosen meets all the criteria on the link you provided and are very well respected by the township where we live. We are feeling better about the ventilation issues now because our roofer is having a representative from the shingle manufacturer come out with him to verify his calculations for the need for more intake ventilation. We can't get the manufacturer's extended warranty without adequate ventilation so I am sure that we will know what we need after the rep looks at this. Thanks again!
