Is it true that artillery fungus spores that attack the house will damage and grow on the painted wood cedar shingles. Winter is just about here and for some reason I have acquired artillery fungus. The front of the house and my car are covered with little black spots that are hard to get off - just about impossible on the house. It may be my imagination but it looks like little brown pit marks where I think I got it off. I am 71 with osteoporosis and unable to shovel the cedar mulch away from the house. I am in Massachusetts and shouldn't fungus be dormant this time of year. I am more worried about the house than the car at this point. If I paint over it will the spores stay dormant?
Please help as I read it does not harm vinyl siding but I can not find anything regarding wood shingles.
Thank you.

Same as a Howitzer, the fungus is shot out of the ..Cup... into the breeze. It goes for reflective colors,..is your house white, yellow, or light grey ? With your limitted ability, it`s got you covered. There is really no known substances that magically works on this fungus, but if you could get a labor force, I can reccomend the following: Back in my painting days we would use (0000) steel wool with a mixture of TSP, water, Bleach, (laundry Clorox) and a deturgent (laundry), to remove the spores, After the house dries, we would then use a brick like eraser sponge to remove the stain left behind. Make sure the last step is done on dry surfaces. The same labor force can also help remove ,not pull back the mulch. We had a very wet spring and summer this year in Boston, The wood mulch is worse than the older BARK mulch. Bark dries faster than the wood mulch. Darker colors ( green, blue, brown ect. ect.) help alot to turn the artillery cannon away from your home.
So you can rest a little,.....The artillery fungus will have NO structural effect on the cedar, vinyl or PVC siddings. It`s just a pain in the butt,...no-one wants to do, cleanning process. Try useing gravel, over or instead of mulch. Gravel comes in many colors too !!

Oh, I forgot to tell ya,....Don`t prime and paint over the spores, They are armor piercing rounds !!
Hi - joining in on this topic. I'm not sure that I understand. It seems to me like the only way to get rid of the fungus, which has now been on my house for months, is to paint over it. I have asbestos shingles, so I'm scared to sand them down. Does painting over them not at least cover up the black dots?
