I live just outside of Houston near Galveston Bay where we have a gumbo clay soil. I am looking at residing, and was told by one contractor that the weight of hardiplank can lead to foundation problems as the soil will have problems bearing the weight over time.
Is anyone familiar with such a condition?

If the foundation can't support hardiplanks then don't have any parties.
If you get 6 people in the house and they all gather in one corner it will sink.
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT CONTRACTOR.

I agree with the previous post and it sounds like to me that contractor does know how to or does not want to install HardiPlank.
Let me start by saying thet I live in Pearland so you will know where I have looked. Take a look at any new homes especially one step and above starter homes. You will find all of the siding and soffits are Hardiplank. I agree with the fellows below, this contractor does not know how or does not want to do this job. All it takes is a special blade on your circular saw to cut it and contractors have told me to make sure your have OSB or plywood under it to take any of the flex our houses get in our Gulf Coast gumbo soil. Hardi is hard and will crack if it doesn't have something with flex strength under it.
