I recently purchased a 35 year old home and am planning to finish the basement. The tiles in the basement now are lifting so they need to be removed. It appears they were applied using an adhesive that looks like black tar. I am wondering if the adhesive needs to be removed before I lay down carpet. Will the tar seep through the carpet? Is there anything I should use to cover the floor first?

Hi mlaplante,
You'll be spreading a carpet adhesive over the floor prior to laying the rug. This should prevent any bleed through even though I doubt it would anyway.Actually,I have seen black tile adhesive in older installations and am not aware of any problems it may pose to carpeting.Just to be sure, check the bare floor after tile removal...there shouldn't be any black adhesive that transfers to your shoes.
