I want to expand a room in my basement. It is bordered by a bearing wall. I wish to move this wall about 3 or 4 feet. I know I will have to run a beam in it's place, but I am not sure what to use? The span will be 10 or 12 feet. The basement has one floor above it, and the house is about 35 or 40 years old. HELP?

Hi javaheadz,

You need the advice of a Structural Engineer. No one from here can see your situation. If you don't hire a SE, good luck explaining to your insurance co. why the 1st floor is in the basement! They'll say, "Negligence" faster than you can dial an SE's phone number. (It's $$$ well spent my friend.)

My best to ya and hope this helps.
