As a follow-up, I recently bought a house with a partially finished basement. There are separate boiler and laundry rooms. The walls are framed with wood studs, but instead of drywall, only paneling was used. The noise from the boiler and the washer and dryer is loud and impedes on the sound from the television and stereo. In addition, I have an electronic drumset in the boiler room, and the sound of me hitting the pads goes right through the walls, as well as the ceiling. I don't want to drywall the ceiling, thought I could drywall the walls, but I would like to keep as much of the sound from these two rooms out of the finished part of the basement and the main level of the house. Any suggestions?

It might be a good idea to insulate the walls with fiberglass batts before putting up the drywall to help deaden the sound, otherwise you're just creating a 'wall drum'. You could insulate the ceiling as well and/or put in a drop ceiling using acoustic tiles.
Thanks, Wally. I have been doing my homework and found that Owens Corning makes a sound deadening insulation. I also found a product called Homasote that is a sound deadener. The dropped celing works a little bit, because I have one in the finished part of the basement, but that needs to be reinforced somehow as well, because a lot of sound still creeps through the floor.
