Hi all. New to the forum and have a couple of questions.

I'm planning a sand-bed paver patio bordering the rear of our house. Should the border course of pavers butt right up against the foundation, using the foundation in place of the plastic or metal retaining strips?

Second question: Our soil composition is mainly clay and is hard to excavate. Short of hiring a Bobcat to do the digging, could I first go over the area with a roto-tiller to loosen the soil, then dig it out manually?

Answer to your first question is, yes. You can use the foundation instead of the edge strip. Just maintain a distance between the foundation and first paver the same width as you'll use between all the pavers, and sweep sand into the space as you will with all the other joints.

If you have access to a rear tine tiller, then yes, you can till the earth to loosen it for digging. Don't try it with a front tine tiller, as you'll soon regret the choice. It will be a lot more work. Try to keep the tilling depth uniform throughout the area, and the compact the earth to remain as best you can prior to backfilling with your sand.
