Our sump pump has been pumping once a MINUTE for about a week. We are in New Jersey and have had a fair amount of rain and snow but this seems excessive. Do you think this indicates a serious problem?

This is our first winter in this house so I don't know if this is normal or not. TIA

Relax this can be very normal occurance after heavy rains or snow melting I have a sump pump and I build alot of buildings and my own pump constantly pumps after rain or snow melt. One thing to make sure is that the discharge outside the house is directed away from the house and that it dos'nt drain back to the house.Otherwise you will be pumping the same water your trying to get rid of.

Have you check to make sure the pumps on/off trips are properly set to allow the pump basin to fill sufficiently. What I mean is, dose syour sump pit fill once per minute, or does the water level just get high enough to trip the switch because the pump is not adjusted properly.

I am trying to buy a house for the very first time and I just found out that the sump pump is active more than it should be. It have been raining and it did snow but it have not snowed to the point where the ground have been completely covered. The ground is frozen so I don't see how water can be flowing around the foundation. Can some one help me out please

A couple of possible issues:
1) the sump basin is too small (it allows some water in while more water is waiting). The pump runs and then the small basin fills up again.
SOLUTION: Install a larger basin and make sure it has gravel around it and perforation to allow the water to come in at the sides and not just over the top.

2) The pump does not have a check valve on it. A check valve does not allow water that is being pumped to leak back into the basin. If you are pumping 20 gallons of water, have a long rise to the outside then you may be letting half the water back in and then trying to pump the same water back out.
SOLUTION: Install a sump pump check valve.

Hope this helps.
