We recently purchased a house that has arborvidae trees next to the house. My husband cut them down and now we have the ugly stumps sticking out of the ground. We tried pulling them with a winch with no luck. Any ideas?

If you have a truck, or a friend with a truck, and a good size chain, you can try pulling them out with the chain wrapped around the stump and a root and attached to the truck. OSHA might frown on such a tactic, but I've used it. It's best to expose the roots as much as possible prior to pulling, and even cutting the larger ones. That means some digging. But it really does make a difference...and it makes it safer. No one should be standing close in case the chain snaps. Make the best effort you can to expose as much of the stump and roots as possible...or hire someone to grind or excavate.
