We bought a house in 2000. It had an oil leak in the basement. It was cleaned up before we bought it. Since we have been living here, we can smell the oil throughout the house. How do we get rid of the smell??

- oil smell from basement
Hi Missysue,
I have had several spills in my basement due to a bad oil pump and from the oil company overfilling the tank.Since the oil soaks into the cement,it will always be there to some degree. There is a product called BANZODOR which contains enzymes which neutralize the odor.Normally used on a fresh spill area, you could try putting this powder down and leaving it a few days.Follow-up with sprinkling baking soda on the floor and leaving that a few days.In both instances use caution if you have pets and/or children. My basement probably still smells but I'm used to it after several years.
