I am planning to put an excercise room in my basement and am somewhat confused regarding how to do this properly as it pertains to insulation, vapor barriers, etc.

I live in Wisconsin and have a full basement under the house. It is not a heated basement, but we do run a dehumidifier. We have no water problems in the basement.

I plan on using 2x4 construction. Do I insulate the exterior walls? If so, what is my best choice for insulation? What about vapor barriers?

Do I insulate the ceiling (I want to control sound also)?

I was going to put a floor in place so that laying on the floor doing excercises is more comfortable. Do I insulate the floor? What about vapor barrier on the floor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Do not use standard 2x4 wood contruction.

use FBS panels and steel stud if you do not have a moisture problem, and you must be a do it your selfer.

Moisture test goes something like this.

Test an area by taping plastic sheeting against the walls and floors in various areas, check over night if nothing proceed to test for moisture for a 3 day or 7 day period of time. ANY MOISTURE found on the plastic and the masonry is a problem. PERIOD and you must construct to allow the moisture to flow naturally.

If you build incorrectly, you could harbor mold, in the basement. You may be ok, from what you say but better safe than sorry. If you find moisture, try looking at Owens Corning Basement Finishing system, it is not cheap but looks and sounds great. Cost about the standard of building a sunroom or small addition, but is very safe and quick construction.
