All,

I am in the process of finishing my basement and have few questions before I nail some wood. I have a ranch house and the main beam(2x12) runs across, dividing the house in half. I would like to use the main beam and build a wall(or partition) under it. Is this OK or "up to code"? The main beam would be inside the wall when I finish it with drywall. Which brings up my next question. Is it ok to attach drywall directly on to the main beam or do I need to build a soffit or wall around it first? Any and all thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Ben

build wall under beam tight enough, but not forcing it up. and drywall like normal up the wall and up beam.
