Bvbasement
We just purchased an older house, and we live in Michigan. Our house has had a mysterious oder coming from the basement. We found it to be coming from the crawl space. The crawl space is unventilated, and there is a hole in the wall to get to it. There was a vapor barrier at one point, but it is all bunched up. We just had an inspector go in there and he didn't find any thing like a sewage leak or rotting wood or dead animal or anything. He recommends that we make it part of basement, by insulating around the foundation, and adding a register in there. Well if there is still a smell, then that will just push the smell into the house more. I realize that if we add ventilation, we'll have to insulate the floor and probably put a vapor barrier on it, and on the ground and duct work. Does anyone have any insight on this? We don't know where the smell is coming from....
