How clean do concrete basement floors need to be before you lay down carpet?
I swept them the best I could and did a little with the shop vac, but there just seems to be never ending dust from the drywall and spackle and other work we did. Is it okay that there is still a some dust in the cracks or do I need to mop the floors? If I don't mop what will happen with the dust left under the padding and carpet?

- carpet on basement floor
I would never suggest carpet for a basement floor. Over 90% of carpets give off odors or out gas poisons. So putting carpet in an area that has little or no ventilation is not a good idea. If you have small children, the dangers are amplified. Carpet also will hold in moisture and harbor bacteria. If you insist of laying carpet, you may not want to glue it down, in case you need to rip it out. Opening the pores with a good wet cleaning is advised. Make sure you let the water/moisture evaporate before you lay the carpet.
