Hi. we are updating the insulation in the attic. The old is very black and dusty. We've removed some of it - but what a mess. Is it necessary to remove or can we just add unfaced insulation over it? 2nd question - can we insulate the side walls of the attic - not the ceiling but the side walls?

have insulation blown in....much better..

you probably have oil paint on the inside of the house to act as your vapor barrier...

seal all holes from the inside(pipes) to the attic with expanding foam to stop air leaks.

no need to insulate attic end walls..
