Is it better to vent a bathroom fan through the roof or through the soffits? We are thinking of using the soffit vent. Are certain brands better than others? Any other tips or suggestions?

We live in snowy Illinois if that makes a difference. Our house is one story and the bathroom is situated next to an exterior wall.
